On USC's opening series , he carried the ball five times for 29 yards, culminating a 75 yard drive with a six yard sweep around right end with 10:04 remaining in the first period. On the first play following Ken Garrett's 57 yard scoring run Harris raced 21 yards to the Carolina 41. Tommy Simmons ran at left tackle for four more, then Glen Morris hit Jimmy Mitchell for eight. Morris later scrambled nine yards to the Deacon 17, where one play later, Harris swept the left side for 16 yards and his second score. Late in the first half a USC drive stalled, and Tommy Bell, who was responsible for all of the Carolina conversions, sailed a 25 yard field goal through the uprights, giving the Gamecocks a 17-7 halftime margin. Wake took the second half kick and drove only 13 yards before being forced to punt. Deacon punter Chuck Ramsey lofted a beautiful 52 yarder to Thad Rowe, who had replaced Harris on defense. Rowe raced 50 yards to the Wake 40, setting up Carolina's final score. .. During this drive, the Gamecocks successfully gambled on two fourth and one situations. At the Wake 31, Harris drove into the left side for five yards and a first, while at the Deacon 6, Simmons drove into the line for a yard and another first down. One play later, Harris ran the left end for the final four yards, ending the scoring at 24-7. Sports Editor Dick Harris surprised a lot of people Saturday night, and Wake Forest coach Cal Stoll was one of those not -so-pleasantly surprised. "I don't. know where he's been the last three years, but he's a hell of a running back," said the Wake coach. Harris lined up at running back for the Gamecock's first offensive play from scrimmage and served notice of what was to come with a nine yard gain on his first rush of his career at USC. The bad part about it-- at least from Stoll's point of view-- was that there had been no indication of the event before the game. "We had no idea whatsoever that Harris would be on offense," said Stoll, obviously quite displeased over his lack of knowledge of the fact. Harris gave the Gamecocks something they had been missing in most of their nine previous games--an outside threat with speed-- and had Stoll known this, his defensive preparations would have changed tremendously.. "I had told the writers from The State Wednesday that Harris would start, but had asked them to keep it out of the papers," said USC head coach Paul Dietzel.
