Intrasquad swim. meet set; frosh oppose veterans By CHARLIE COLLINS Asst. Sports Editor Carolina gets its first look at the 1971-1972 edition of the USC swimming team Thursday, Nov. 18 In the second annual intrasquad swim meet. The meet, pitting the freshmen against the upperclassmen, will be held in the Gamecock's pool at 4 p.m. "We think it will be a very good and exciting meet," said head coach Allan Gentry. "The upper class should win it though on the basis of the diving. Since the best divers are in the upper classes, the freshmen are going into the meet 14 points behind. They'll have to swim like crazy to beat the swimmers. "The coaches are staying out of it," said Gentry. "We're letting the boys decide who's going to swim where themselves. "It should be interesting. I don't think there is any doubt that there will be some new freshmen records set in the meet." After working with a team of about 18 swimmers and divers last season, Gentry has a squad of about 28 almost equally divided between freshmen and up perclassmen this season. "The freshmen are strong in the backstroke, the individual medley and relays," Gentry said. "Of course (Trond) Williams (last season's 50 and 100 yard freestyle swimmer) graduated, but Classy Clafin is faster than anyone we had last season. The freshmen also have Kim Douglas and Mike Hiller. "The upperclass breaststrokers are being jumped all over by the freshmen in the time trials," Gentry continued. "Of the upperclassmen, James Chellis is moving well and Tobby Kerr is not moving well. That's Just because it's the early part of the season, I think. "The butterfly should really be a great race between Jim Villa and the fresh men, and Nick Kesselring and Charles Shoemaker will be fighting it out in the 500-yard freestyle. "It looks like about 80 per cent of the freshmen will be helping us out a lot this year. Last year we were so weak as far as personnel was concerned we didn't have enough to fill the events. For instance, we didn't have a regular individual medley man. This year we have three. Now we'll always have someone to move in in case someone is sick." The Gamecocks' first meet of the season will be the Atlantic Coast Swim Festival held Nov. 25-27 in Raleigh.
