No. 1 MR.FARRELL, In reference to the blatant and unprecedented accusations directed to the "elite" Residents of Bates House by one Barry Masters, I would like to say a word in behalf of some of the so called "snobs" living in this "Kingdom in the Sun." As one of the many freshmen inhabiting the Hallowed Halls of Bates House, I find that the traits attributed to a "typical" resident are entirely foreign to the actual truth of the matter. Who the hell gave Mr. Masters the authority to conclude from a mere observation that the "typical Resident" is a snob. However Mr. Masters doesn't know me and I ascertain that I and the other residents that I know are not snobs! As for Mr. Feheley, I know nothing of his character per sonally. The only thing I know of Mr. Feheley is that during the student senate elections, in which he was running, he failed to show for the scheduled debates. I think this showed poor judgement on the part of Mr. Feheley but as far as his snobbishness or the political machine he has created is con cerned, I think you should re examine your grounds for criticizing the residents of Bates House. Obviously, your attack on Bates House was directed as a personal insult toward Mr. Feheley. In this case I will let Mr. Feheley defend himself but as for the remaining residents, let me assure you, Mr. Masters, it will be some time before you will be welcomed with open arms in these Hallowed Halls. If he had indeed written it with the pdrpose being, "for a greater Carolina," then he deserves commendation. Yet as it stood, the article lashes out unfairly at the typical Bates House resident. I find neither myself nor Mr. Masters capable of stereotyping the entire strata of students at Bates into the one general category of snobbery. If Mr. Master's purpose was to criticize Mr. Pete Feheley, Bates House President, then I suggest he limit his attack to this exclusive area. I personally cannot attack or defend Mr. Feheley's political activities because I know little of the inner workings of our campus "political machine." Perhaps Bates House does possess an air of separation from the main campus community. Yet this gap is primarily one of distance, not of elite snobbery! You may consider us "quite humorous" Mr. Masters, but ironically that is not the attitude I took toward your article . As a resident of Bates, I have noted no "arrogant, snobbish" attitude toward the rest of the Carolina S 9 Your F. T. D. Jimmy editor ue community. I , for one, am proud to be a part of it, small though that part may be. Strange is it not that Mr. Masters has classed us as snobs? And yet he himself has taken the self appointed title of personal analyzer and condemner of some 500 Bates House residents. As far as his blatant accusation that Bates shows no concern for its surrounding community, be it black or white, how does Mr. Masters account for the $200.00 recently spent by Bates for a Neighborhood Halloween Party? It was not through arrogance and snobbery that this effort brought joy to the children in this surrounding Bates area! In conclusion, let me recom mend that Mr. Masters henceforth limit his verbal slurs to those who deserve such chastisement. If the political system of Bates or any segment of our campus com munity needs reform, then by all means let it come to the awareness of all. Yet a general scolding of the "arrogant" attitude of any one section of our campus residents can do little but foster ill feeling and certainly bring no significant political reform. If the political shoe fits, Mr. Masters, let us wear it! If not, perhaps then it should be sized again? ROBERT D. DOWNING BATES HOUSE RESIDENT No. 3 MR. FARRELL, I can't help but wonder whether the alias Mr. Barry Masters was ever kicked out of Bates House for misconduct. His letter was a true display of ignorance of the truth. It was, also, typical of an act somebody would pull if they were out to even a score. I need not verify this statement, because anyone associated with Bates House knows this is true. But what really griped me was the comment about how the Hall Advisors think that they are better than any of the other residence hall staffs. As a Bates House Hall Advisor, I can honestly say that none of the staff members here have ever said such a thing. We most certainly do not go around campus (of which we are a part) telling everybody that our staff is the best. Subsequently, Mr. Masters must think that this is the case. For that much, I thank him. DENNIS HOYER 8TH FLOOR HALL ADVISOR BATES HOUSE No. 4 MR. FARRELL: Carolina has found an answer to Spiro Agnew of Washington. I am a part of the "Feheley Political Machine" currently ruling over the snobs of Bates House, or should I now call it the Bates-Hilton? The letter of Mr. Masters left me in wonder. For my dorm to be so extremely envied on campus and the people over here not know about it really did suprise me! Mr. Masters seemed to say that we are the upper-class of campus. You know, that is really something. Seriously speaking, if Mr. Masters is going to form an image of our dorm for. the Carolina student, why not ask him to give the complete picture of Bates. Our dorm not only sponsors parties for the residents of the dorm, but also for the almost six-hundred children in our neighborhood. Our dorm has taken several steps to improve not only the relations with our neighbors, but with the campus as well. Bates is respresented in all the intramurals, and also, has Mr. Masters checked into the amount of time and energy that was produced for such projects as the United Fund Drive by Bates House residents? I ask that this letter be printed so that the sudents of USC can see that even though we are physically off campus, we are a part of this place and intend to remain so. P. S. By the way, who is Barry Masters, he's not even in the directory !
