Registration
Three Furman University students have been
granted the right to register to vote in Greenville
County by the Greenville County Voter Registration
Board.
The decision was given because the students were
able to give the board the reasonable assurance that
they planned on living in the county after they were
graduated from the school.
The board chairmAn was informed by legal
authorities that a statement of intent constitutes their
right to register. This move was a wise one and will
help in the bringing about of fresh voter response
with the younger citi7ens being able to vote.
The students here at Carolina should look into
something of this nature because this would help in
bringing about the same effect here in Richland
County. There are many USC students that plan to
live here if they do not now and many others that
have established enough of a permanent residency in
order to carry this action through.
The old questions of residency requirements,
automobile registration and parents' residency are
no longer according to this decision.
The student population here at USC has a
responsibility to themselves, if no one else, to try and
bring about changes within this county. The chance
may now be here if the support of such a move is big
enough.

Election mistakes
obviously result
of gross blunders
MR. FARRELL,
The recent Student Government
elections were thrown out for four
reasons. 1. They were not held at
the time specified in the con
stitution. 2. The referendums were
worded incorrectly, were vague,
and in one case were not even
posted at the polling place. 3.
Under the system used, it was
possible to trace how a student
voted. 4. There was a student
senator on the election committee.
All four of these reasons point
directly to the election committee.
It is obvious that only gross
carelessness could account for
these blunders.
Since the election will be held
again, the candidates can try
again, but I wonder what good it
will do as long as the election
committee can jeopardize the
results.
This is one blow against USC's
Student Government, one, from
the already apathetic and even
hostile feeling of the students, it
can ill afford.

God's existence
doesn't involve
question of logic
MR. FARRELL:
After reading M.C. Reids (Mr. or
Miss?) letter in Monday's
Gamecock, I feel that there are a
few things which now must be said.
First, contrary to Reid's beliefs,
my name is Whacker not Thacker,
it's such a pity that someone who
uses such big words (disgorges
anyone?) can't even read. What
was the old saying about common
sense?
I previously stated that I was
open to suggestions and still am.
However, what Reid offered
weren't exactly suggestions. I -
would engage him a battle of wits,
but I never fight an unarmed man.
Reid says we are dealing with an
irrational situation. Who came
first man or God? The only thing
here that is irrational is Reid's
mind! Obviously, man didn't
create the universe, although he
seems to be having a good time
destroying it.
.Also this question of existence
of God doesn't involve logic. F
logic! God exists, always has,
always will and you-Mr. Reid and
all you other atheists--better be
glad He does!
If the universe is self per
petuating please explain its for
mation. If the world Is rational,
kindly explain how so. Rationality
Is a lot of bull-you can rationalize
anything in your own mind. But
you try to get billions of people
over thousands of years to believe
itAtrace man's belief In God). Are
you-Mr. Reid--placing man at the
top? Is he the supreme entity? You
tell me what Is right, Mr. Reid. I'm
not saying that I'm better at nights
knowing that someone greater
than I s around to take care of me.
As to your hypothesis of mankind
taking a cheap ticket to ride, it Is
you who are taking the cheap
ticket. It Is a lot harder to fathom
the Idea .of a supreme being
*trthan man. Atheisrn is a far
rsto the E
However, you, Mr. Reid, live in
? w 8I4J a s ilu a U 1P O W Y
live in mine. Then we will see
where man's only ride takes him.
It's a pity that we must wait until
we die to see who is right. But in
the end Mr. Reid, we if you can
rationalize. Hell fire!!!

School libraries
should open
earlier on Sunday
MR. FARRELL:
IF I were the only student with
this complaint, I wouldn't write
this letter. However, there are
many other students who share my
gripe concerning the opening hour
of the P.S.C. library on Sunday
(2:00 p.m.). Is there any reason the
P.S.C. library, and McKissick, too,
should not open at an earlier hour,
possible 9:00? It would not be
necessary for the professional staff
to be on duty; and surely there
would be students who could be on
duty during earlier hours. A
change of opening hours would be
appreciated very much by many
students.

'Trumbo'
information in
movie review
seems second-hani
MR. FARRELL:
I have just finished reading
Frederica Green's review of the
movie "Johnny Got His Gun". It
seems that she has merely heard
second-hand of Dalton Trumbo's
problems with the Hollywood
blacklist of the McCarthy era.
She says that Dalton Trumbo
was "finally . . . permitted to
return and film his novel."

apprsed of the fact that Trumbo
never left Hollywood. He con
tineued to work in Hollywood
during the blacklist and after
under a variety of pen names.
When Otto Preminger was filming
"Exodus" he announced that
Trumbo was at work on the
screenplay and that he would
receive on-screen credit for doing
so. This announcement prompted
the producers of Stanley Kubrick's
film "'Spartacus" to give Trumbo
on-screen credit for having written
the screenplay for that film also.
I might also add that Trumbo
got no financial support from the
Hollywood he was "finally per
mitted to return" to. "Johnny Got
His Gun" was filmed with money
which Trumbo was forced to raise
himself.
Miss Green ends her review by
saying "Trumbo's back." Perhaps
with a slight bit of research, she
would have realized that Trumbo
"never left"!

Letters Policy
We will continue our policy of
printing all signed (no pen names)
letters we receive.
We have received quite a few
letters without the necessary
signatures. Thus, we couldn't
publish them. However, if the
reader wishes to have his name
withheld, we will do so only after
he has signed the letter.
Also, please have the letters
typed or written neatly so our
secretary won't get eye strain.
