Tyler Hellams
The return of Hellams has
helped the defense greatly but he
credits the turnabout of the squad
from last year to other things.
"This year we have eleven guys
who want to hit. We've got ex
perience over last year. We had a
great spring, we are a trim, quick

"The biggest change from last
year is Rick Brown. He's a big
si rong linebacker who really helps
the team.
"One thing which helps the
secondary is the tremendous pass
rush we've had so far. That really
helps. Also the linebackers get
back real well on pass coverage.
"Another thing which has helped
us is that the entire defense has
stayed well. So far we've had no
serious injuries and that is what is
holding us together. Last year the
linebackers were always getting
knocked out.
"As long as we stay well we've
got a good shot at the rest of the
season."
Hellams previews the upcoming
Tennessee game and its effects on
the remainder of the season. "We
expect them to run. Curt Watson is
one real good hardnosed back who
we have to watch out for.
"It should be a good tough game.
Tennessee gave Auburn a real
battle. If we lost the Tennessee
game, it would take some of the
luster off the season. We would like
to win the rest of the contests.
Eight and three would look good,
seven and four is certainly not as
good as eight and three."
"I certainly wouldn't be at all
satisfied with a six and five mark."

Carolina's defense sparked the
Gamecocks to five wins in the first
six starts of the 1971 football
season, but coach Paul Dietzel's
team must generate a more
consistent offense if the
Gamecocks are to break a two
game losing streak.
Coming out of the slump this
weekend will be no easy assign
ment as USC meets Southeastern
Conference power Tennessee at
Knoxville. The Vols, 5-2 on the
season to Carolina's 5-3, had of
fensive problems of their own until
Saturday when new quarterback
Jim Maxwell engineered a 38-3
rout of Tulsa, an early season
.conqueror of Arkansas.
USC, meanwhile, was being shg

Senior tailback Billy Ray Rice has
been the most consistent runner,
nett ing 279 yards for a 4.3 average.
Senior fullback Tommy Simmong
has rushed 226 yards and scored
six touchdowns, but is averaging
only 3.2 yards per carry.
Sophomore tailback Carlton
Haywood has 162 yards for a 2.9
average, and junior fullback
Charlie Jetton has 127 yards for a
