Hoping to learn more about the
growth of cancer cells, a USC
chemistry professor is studying
the behqvior of two enzymes im
portant to human cell growth.
Dr. R. Bruce Dunlap of USC has
receiv6d a three-year cancer
research grant of $84,000 from the
National Institutes of Health to
study two particular enzymes,
both of which are related to the
synthesis of DNA, the genetic
material of life.
"Every living cell has hundreds
of enzymes which work to produce
reactions within the cell," Dunlap
explained. "The two enzymes I'm

especially important role in the
formation of two compounds which
in turn are incorporated into DNA.
"If we could understand how and
why these enzymes work the way
they do, we would be a lot closer to
controlling the growth of cells," he
said.
Cancer cells, Dunlap said, grow
much more rapidly than normal
cells and thus act "like a swarm of
locusts" to rob normal cells of
their needed nutrients.
"If we could slow down the
growth of cancer cells," he said,
"we could diminish their effect on
the organism."
To obtain his enzymes in a
purified state Dunlap grows
bacteria which contain large
amounts of the enzymes and then
"cracks open the bacterial cells"
to separate the enzymes. A
scientific breakthrough less than
two years ago, he said, enables
researchers to isolate these two
enzymes in a pure state.
In an attempt to learn how the
rs 'very tense
between India,
Pakistan ran short of supplies in a
1965 India clash. Nevertheless,
both countries are building up
troops along their borders, they
admitted this week.
"The continuing rebellion in
East Pakistan is causing pressures
for war in both countries, because
of India's support of the Bengali
rebels," Sederberg said.

four graduate assistants are ex

laboratory where the temperature
is 38 degrees fahrenheit. Pure
enzymes, he said, will break down
chemically unless kept at a cold
temperature.
After studying the mechanisms
of the two enzynies found. in nor
mal bacterial cells, Dunlap will
extend his study to examine the
same two enzymes taken from
cancer cells.
"It's possible cow to obtain
enzymes from experimenttal
leukemia and tumor cells," he
said. "We hope to find how the
mechanisms of the two enzymes in
these cancerous tissues compare
with the enzyme mechanisms in
normal cells."
Dunlap said he and his assistants
are among 10 cancer-research
groups around the world working
with these same two enzymes, but

with both governments to try to
lower the chance of war, Seder
