JIM FARRELL EDI'VR LUCRETIA JONES DAVE LUNDGREN' MANAGING ED AD. MNGR. EDITORIALS In reply MR. FENNELL: Your letter interests me greatly because you have accused me of running a "leftist" publication and have attempted to condemn me for the policies of an editor or rewspaper of the past. You have accused me of "unwarranted" build ups of "unpopular or political groups" using Thomas Broadwater and SMC as examples. May I remind you that I was not editor at the time and that the situation on the GAMECOCK concerning staff is a transient one in which the editorial policies change with the changes in the editorial position each semester. How can you honestly tell me that I have "practiced several forms of deception" with regard to last year? The petition incident you mentioned and erroneously connected me with may have taken place, I don't really know. Again, I was not the editor at the time of this incident and the staff was that of another editor. To return to the "leftist" influence on the paper, I think it is quite evident that if the GAMECOCK is to be considered leftist at this point then the ideologies of the left have been modified so that they are no longer discern Lble. In reference to the Josh McDowell coverage, the picture you wanted was on the front page of the Oct. 20 issue. The follow-up story received the coverage that my news editor, whom I appointed, felt it warranted in a news value judgement. You asked why the GAMECOCK could not cover the essence of materials passed out concerning the appearance of William Kuntsler. When the facts are not known as to the passing out of this material it is rather difficult to write something concerning it. Our job was to report the appearance of the man and any incident that took place at his ap pearance. The first story that was published concerning the appearance was written from his speech. The second article was a column-an opinion piece-not to be confused with straight news which I feel you have done. The columns in the GAMECOCK, such as the columns on CAROLINATYPE, do not necessarily express the views of the GAMECOCK or any particular staff member. A column presents a view which may or may not agree with the views of the readers. We hope a column will stimulate thought and allow a reader to develop a personal opinion on a subject. Once more, the editorial policies of the GAMECOCK change with the editorial personnel. As you may have noticed, the GAMECOCK printed a story on a speech made by Rep. Floyd Spence, R-Lexington County. It received a five column banner headline display with five columns of print on the speech. FARRELL: Despite all of your claims to the contrary, it appears that The Gamecock is still the one-sided, discriminatory, biased artificially subsidized mouthpiece of the left it has been for the past several years. Although you have given other points of view token news coverage from time to time, The Gamecock has become nothing more than a propaganda sheet paid for by unwilling subscribers. You have practiced several forms of deception. You have taken unknown or unpopular or political groups (always liberal or leftist) and built them up un warranted, often front page "news items," interviews and photos. That is what you did with Thomas Broadwater last year and with SMC this year. The Gamecock has thrown up news blackouts around people and ideas contrary to its own political opinions. That is what your "newspaper" did last year in regard to a humane treatment for prisoners of war petition signed by several thousand on campus and a speech on campus by a former prisoner of the Viet Cong. Gamecock reporters knew about the petition and speech well in advance. In fact, some of your "'The Tc bit as me as anyth has done --all "Ingmar B the best ever ma Elliott ( NOW P Coming NOV. 5th All NEW ... Julius . Caesar . . ecock is b staff members came by the petition table to shout "facist pig!" and other intelligent epithets| typical of your "open minded" journalism. But not one of them bothered to report anything about the petition or speech in The Gamecock. The news blackout is what The Gamecock applied when Josh McDowell spoke recently on campus. Well, you gave him token recognition. The only coverage you gave him was to say that he mentioned student government with a crack About welcoming the controversy. If he hadn't men tioned the SGA, those who did not attend would have no idea that this man who drew thousands to hear him even showed up. Instead the GAMECOCK of Oct. 22 has a large photo and story about some squatting yogi. Over 2500 turned out for Josh McDowell. Why did you ignore such a newsworthy event? What are you "open minded liberals" afraid of? When William Kunstler ap peared on campus, several thousand fliers, with radical quotes from Kunstler were distributed on campus. Why did it take such a publication to show the other side of this man? Why couldn't The Gamecock report it? What ar.e you "open minded liberals" afraid of? uch'is a worl iture and myi ing Ingmar Bi in the last fey :hard Schickel, Life Magazine ergman's 'The 1 film about love ould in Ingmar Bergni Ihe Touch"o LAYING . . . 1-3 tased Don't forget that ridiculous recent column saying that Carolinatype oppresses student to print a selected point of view. What do you think The Gamecock is doing? For years many students have been crying out for an in dependent, responsive student newspaper. When it comes to reporting anything political, you "open minded liberals" just can't hack it. EDWARD C. FENNELL (Print this, too!) Please note: Last year I sent six let ters to your Gamecock com plaining of news bias. You refused five and printed only part of one. However, you did manage to print a three page letter from a non student, Brett Bursey. This year you have promised to print all letters. If you do not print this letter in its entirety, word for word, comma for comma, I'm sure that The STATE and "the com mittee to publish the side of the news The GAMECOCK is likely to ignore" will. Considering all of the space the other side gets, you should print this in bold blue letters on the front page - even though I can spell America. P.S. This would be neatly typed, )ut I don't have a big office full of ypewriters like The Gamecock ias. k every terious ,rgman f years!" ouch' Is he has s New Yorker -7-9 COMING SOON Richard Chamberlain The Music Lovers
