And no wonder. After 18 years of fighting the wars of the ACC tournament, McGuire gets a chance to get Into the regional tournament without having to survive the three-day ordeal. But McGuire was not responsible for the withdrawal from the ACC. "Basketball had nothing to do with us getting out of the conference," McGuire said yesterday after his squad had worked out. "We're just going along, that's all. Of course we do get away from the tournament, which Is not the way to pick a champion." But McGuire does not think that getting into the regional tourney will be easier. "It won't be any easier because we are playing a tougher schedule," he said. "The ACC was tough but we will be playing better teams this year. UCLA's Wooden said that the ACC was a lot of talk. He said look at the records, only one team, my 1957 UNC team, won the national title." One of the main reasons that McGuire figures the sch9dule to be harder is that USC "knows nothing about the other teams that we play." McGuire said. "We'll have to wait and see. If we were,playing ACC teams we would know what they were going to do. We never g6t fooled by their strategy. It'll be interesting until we get a file on them. We're playing a tough schedule and we're proud of it. We want to get into the playoffs but we didn't go looking for patseys." (Sft SPORT, Page 7, Col. ). This balance and sped has shown itself in the Frosh's 35-0 rout of The Citadel freshmen and their 15-14 comeback victory over N.C. State. A necessary intangible was also evident in Raleigh. "The boys just never allowed themselves to give up (against State)", said Powers. "I don't know if they were in better con dition than State, but they were in good enough condition to pull it out with a few breaks in the fourth quarter. "N.C. State was quite improved over the films we've seen of them. They had a boy named Roland Hooks who was just as devastating as Willie Burden was last year. I was really imprressed with him. "Their defensive line played even better than last year's. They were really aggressive. "The difference offensively was Hooks, though," said Powers. And they h had a fullback doing some fine blocking for them. From a team that had been averaging about 19 completions per game, the Carolina squad might have expected more passing. "They didn't throw the ball as much as they have'," said Powers, "but with such a good rushing attack, they didn't need to. The Carolina defense might have had something to do with the Wolfpack's decision to keep the ball on the ground. "They com pleted only five of 22 and had five interceptions," said the freshmen mentor. "We've had nine interceptions in two games and no man has gotten more than two. That indicates that the defensive line and backfield coaches are doing good jobs," Several of his ballplayers have done superlative jobs also, ac cording to the frosh coach. "Bill Cregar and Tom Zipperly have done outstanding jobs in running the ball," said Powers. "They made the big play when we had to have it against State. It's really hard to be too high on them because they've been the dif ference in our games. 'Several others turned in real fine performances for us in the State game- people like Tommy Hite, who came in for injured Rusty Richardson. Hite made two real fine defensive plays. "Gerald Witt and Lamar Bluff made a couple of big plays for us and Jay Lynn Hodges made the big play in the fourth quarter that allowed us to keep the ball and go on to score. He was stopped at the line on fourth and six inches, but got the first diown on second effort. To complement the fine back field, there is a fine line. "Steve Blacksman, Steve Limbo, and Bob Harvey have blocked real well, said Powers. "We've had good efforts from them that have opened some holes." On the defensive line, Powers had praise for linebackers Gary McLaren and John Connell. "They've played real good defensive ballgames. They aren't real flashy. but they do goona job..'
