"I feel that no community is
any stronger than the strength

Washington Jr., Student
Government Secretary for
Minority Affairs, said.
Washington said the purpose
of his office is "to enhance the
opportunities and aspirations
of minority students on
campus. There are many
students that have expressed a
desire to work with us in some
area. I am now soliciting your
help in implementing some of
our projects,'" he said.
Outlining several projects,
Washington requested that all
interested persons, members
or non-members of a minority,
come to a 5:30 p.m. meeting in
Room 306 of the Russell House,
Oct. 21, or send a represen
tative to seek solutions to
problems minorities en
counter.
Washington said the former
"School Desegregation Project
is taking on a new dimension
thIs year and .is working in
cooperation with the Southern
Regional Council in Atlanta."
This project aims to (1)
utilize the existing or potential
peer group relationship be
tween college and high school
students, (2) establish a wedge
of neutrality among and bet
ween black and white youths,
(3) lay the foundations for
inter-racial projects, con

Washington said this year's
''new perspective" deals with
(1) problems of minorities in
application and admission to
Carolina and (2) seeks high
school students' attitudes with
regards to Carolina and works
with the Speakers' Bureau to
make recruiting minorities
productive."
A Minority Involvement
Committee has been formed to
discover (1) what areas of
student life lack involvement
of minorities, (2) what
problems keep minorities from
being active and (3) do
minority groups feel them
selves a vital part of the
Carolina Community?
Washington said his office
plans to establish several
committees to handle other
areas of minority affairs
pertaining to the Carolina
Community. These proposed
committees include a Minority
Council to organize minorities
and focus on their common
problems, a "Minority Day,"
to which high school minority
students will be invited in an
effort to attract more
minorities to the University
and a Minority Retreat which
will be a weekend rap session
for all minority students.
