I am referring to the letter
concerning the Viet Cong flag in
the Pi Kappa Phi house. If my
thinking is right about the
fraternity named, according to
your version of my letter, the
fraternity men could give a damn
what kind of flag was being
displayed in their house. However,
for the benefit of a few concerned
fraternity men I make exception.
What I said in my original and
uncensored letter was this. "I
wonder how the fraternity men
who have died in Vietnam would
react if they could see that flag

What a difference the original
makes over the printed form. I am
certain this was an editing slip. If it
was purely a censoring effort, I am
beginning to hear Mr. Agnew's
words about the press ring true.

I would like to thank Pi Kappa
Phi fraternity house for rein
forcing my "anti-Greek" feelings.
I was walking behind the Un
dergraduate Lbrary where I saw
quite a display of ignorance and
poor taste. A Viet Cong flag was
draped across a window in the Pi
Kappa Phi fraternity house.
I will not get into political issues,
but I do wonder how fraternity
brothers of Pi Kappa Phi who have
died in Vietnam would react if they
saw that flag being displayed in
their fraternity house.

MR. FARRELL:
I'm writing this as an open letter
to Pete Brown concerning his
feelings about ROTC. Well, Mr.
Brown, you feel that ROTC "limits
a young man's expanding
horizons" and "intensively in
doctrinates" him into a military
way of thinking. May I ask how did
you escape the terrible grip of this
ROTC indoctrination? I suppose
you must consider yourself
superior to anyone else who enters
ROTC. You experienced the same
"intensive indoctrination" and
"severe limiting of horizons" that
every member of ROTC does and
decided that the military wasn't
for you. Fine.
Don't you think others possess
the ability to make the same
decision, if they so desire? What
special ability do you possess that
allowed you to escape the terrible
grip ROTC had on you? Don't you
think that others should be given a
choice in the matter, just as you
were? To me, your argument is
even more "simple-minded" than
the editorial you attacked. Your
solution, the abolishing of ROTC
entirely, is just as bad as having a
mandatory ROTC requirement for
every student who enrolls. Why
don't you let each individual make
a personal decision about ROTC
instead of deciding for them?
