Two students recently were
accused of plagiarizing in
writing a term paper and
received a failing grade in the
course.
Clay Riley, Student
Government Ombudsman, was
contacted and talked with the
students to determine if they
had a valid problem.
Riley -contacted the in
structor and arranged a
meeting between the parties.
Riley found the two students
had worked closely on the
paper, but there had not been
any plagiarizing. The problem
was settled to everyone's
satisfaction.
The Ombudsman, Riley
says, has to determine if the
problem is a valid one, mediate
the conflict, and seek a just

Riley outlined his duties in
three areas. First, those
relating to the business of the
institution including tuition,
loans, scholarships, parking
and campus employment.
Second, academic needs of
registration, course loads,
grading and late entry of
students. The third area is
personal problems.
Riley says he has en
countered two types of
problems. First are problems
of a personal nature. A foreign
graduate student, new on the
Carolina Campus, tried to
transfer to another USC
graduate school without
knowing what the
requirements were. The
