MR. FARRELL:
In reference to the article,
"Lambda Chi Wins Behind Pinion"
by Matt Covington, appearing on
page seven of the Oct. 6 issue of
The Gamecock. I was with Mr.
Covington as he covered the in
tramural football games, and in
his article he had planned to cite
all twelve teams who had played in
the six games he had covered. He
had also planned on citing the
three teams who impressed him
most, those being the Married
Students, Preston, and the Lamb
da Chi Alpha teams.
However, as he was departing
from the final game between
Lambda Chi and ZBT, he was
approached by Doug Williams,
Sports Editor of the Gamecock and
member of Lambda Chi Alpha,
Williams confronted Covington
with the proposition that he,
Williams, would write Covington's
article for him and give the byline
and credit for the article to
Covington. The fact that the
headline read "Lambda Chi
Alpha...." is not my concern. At
that point they were undefeated
and deserved mention. Williams
should either have let Covington
condense his own notes and write
the article he had planned or been
man enough to sign his name to an
article which he obviously wrote.

I am a freshman, and have so far
been impressed by the complete,
honest coverage which The
Gamecock has given all University
functions. However, for someone
in as prominent a position as
Williams to have to resort to such
childish means in order to get his
fraternity in the school newspaper,
is ridiculous. Give the intramural
program and its many teams
honest coverage, or at least have
the sports editor sign his name to
those articles which he has writ
ten.

Destruction
by students
is stopped
MR. FARRELL:
Could you tell me what the devil
is wrong when two 20-year-old
college students of Carolina go out
of their way to wantonly destroy
what they and others have to pay
so much for? I'm referring to an
incident two Saturdays ago in
the vicinity of the new overpass
construction...two students who
had apparently been playing tennis
(dressed for the occasion and
returning from that direction)
went out of their way to turn on a
faucet of industrial cleaning
supplies (55 gal. drum costing
about $65) and casually walk away
to let it run on the ground and down
into the street. If you don't have an
answer, Mr. Editor, that's un
derstandable, however, to those

to the
two students, I have a message: "I
turned it off and you two had better
get turned on to the facts of life. I
got your license tag number and
the color, make, even your general
appearances!" Also, "when it
comes to an increase in fees for
anything on the Carolina campus,
you two better walk on egg shells
when my pockets have to shell out
more... .I'd just as soon see your
rotten kind spill blood on the street
like the cleaning detergent as to
have to support your kind."

U.T. parking

MR. FARRELL:
Regarding the letter of Oct. 6
concerning the parking area for
University Terrace, I do not wish
to appear surly. However, I find
that the ""careful" observations
of Mr. Bonham do not seem to be
"too" careful from my point of
view. According to my own ob
servations, I find that the U. T.
parking area is nearly always
three quarters full. Possibly, Mr.
Bonham does not make his ob
servations at the right time of the
day.
During the day, wives could be
using the cars to drive to work. In
the early evening hours,
University Terrace students may
be out buying groceries. To tell the
truth, it is not too convenient to
carry a bag of groceries from this

In particular to all of those who
let it be understood that they would
participate in a picket line in front
of the Fouke Fur Company on

left the four of us who did intend to
go holding the bag:

USC handling

ridiculous"
MR. FARRELL:
I believe that the handling of the
Veterans Educational assistance
on this campus is in a ridiculous
state of affairs.

tember for most of us will not be
here till sometime after the 20th of
this month due to the veterans
office on campus not certifying our
enrollments until the 27th of Sept.
I believe that this time lapse
from the 4th of Sept. when the
greater part of the registration
was done, when every veteran was
required to stop and fill out certain
forms, and the 27th to certify
enrollment is unexcusable. I am
sure that many other veterans are
depending on the regular arrival of
these educational benefits to
continue their education as much
as I am, and I am sure that the
delay of these checks due to
inefficiency on the part of the USC
veterans office is not appreciated.
I hope that something can be done
to prevent the recurring of this
situation which is placing severe
hardships on a good part of the
sudents of USC. I hope that any
others having this difficulty will
write to the Gamecock and voice
their opinions on this affair.
