The most exciting and perhaps
the most important fraternity
foot ball game was played Monday
night between the Sigma Nu's and
the Alpha Tau Omega's.
The first quarter showed a
struggle between the offensive and
defensive units of both teams.
Neither team was able to start any
kind of drive. The ball changed
hands several times during the
first quarter due to pass in
terceptions and numerous punts.
The second quarter saw both
offenses come to life. The Nu's
came just a little quicker and
scored on a pass from Jon Howell
to Lytle Pressley. The PAT failed.
Mike O'Hara, in a disputed play,
ran 50 yards )n a punt return for
the Nit's final touchdown. The PAT

The fourth quarter started out
like the previous three with very
little advancement of the ball.
Late in the fourth quarter. ATO
scored on the only thing that
resembled any kind of a drive. It
was a pass to Jim Boozer from
Dale Bragg that produced the
touchdown. The same combination
scored the PAT. making the final
score 12-7 in favor of Sigma Nu.
Kappa Alpha won their first
game of the season by holding off
to defeat Sigma Chi. 14-12.
Phi Kappa Sigma defeated Chi
Psi by the score of 19-6.
Pi Kappa Alpha remained un
defeated by winning over Lambda
Chi Alpha 12-0. The Pika game will
be reviewed nex*week. Pi Kappa
Phi beat Kappa Sigma 13-6.

Alan Gentry is optimistic about
his team's chances. "This is
the best team the University
has ever had", said Gentry,
"we're faster than last year's
team."
Anchoring this year's squad
will be junior Glen Spears,
backstroker Bob Warner,
freestyler Nick Kesslering,
Charlie Shoemaker, but
terflyer Jim Villa, Johnny
Poole, Toby Kerr, and diver
Gary Wetherhold. All are
considered contenders for the
Southern Independents
Championships (replacing the
ACC Championships) March 3
4, or the NCAA Championships
at West Point, March 23-24.
Also on hand are a host of
freshman, including seven on
scholarships, led by Rodger
Rice and Chip Newman.
"We're counting on the fresh
man, they look real good and
have a positive attitude about
the swimming program here at
Carolina", said Gentry.
Missing, however, from last
year's 7-3 fourth place ACC
finish, will be graduating
senior Trond Williams, holder
of two freestyling records and
last years "Gamecock of the
Year" awarded each year for
swimming excellence at USC.
Jim Weinzettel who holds two
Gamecock and all time ACC
breastroking records will also
be gone. When losing Williams
and Weinzettel, "we lost a lot
of team leadership" Gentry
said.
Although Carolina has with
drawn from the Atlantic Coast
Conference the schedule still
contains ACC powerhouses
North Carolina State and North
Carolina. Also on tne slate is
South Florida, last year's
runner-up in the NCAA College
Division championships.
Any and all students, staff,
or friends of the University
interested in swimming or
diving according to Gentry are
asked to remember the
following dates: November 4
Infrasquad water polo match;
Novem ber 18-In tr asquad
meet used to determine
starters in first meet;
November 25-27-Atlantic Coast
Swim Festival in Raleigh, N.
C.; December 8 - first home
meet against South Florida.
