Rejuvenated Virginia will be the
latest team to test USC's nationally
ranked defense, as the Cavaliers
face Carolina tomorrow night in
Carolina Stadium at 7:30.
The Gamecocks are currently
ranked among the nation's elite in
two defensive categories. Carolina
is 11th in total defense, allowing
opponents 194.8 yards total offense
per game, and 14th in rushing
defense, having yielded an
average of 96 yards per game.
Virginia broke out of an of
fensive scoring slump last week,
scoring 27 points while knocking
Vanderbilt out of the ranks of the
undefeated. Prior to that en
counter, the Caveliers had not
scored a touchdown in their three
previous games.
Dominated by sophomores and
juniors, Virginia is led by a pair of
underclassmen in the backfield.
Despite the return of last year's
top two rushers, sophomore Kent
Merritt has rushed for 299 yards to
pace the team.
Junior signal caller Larry
Albert, who has been likened to
former Gamecock passing ace
Tommy Suggs. has thrown for 281
yards. completing 21 of 40 tries. In
addition to this, Albert is also
Virginia's second leading rusher,
