"Ain't it awful," said coach Bill Murphy of
Memphis State. And that's how things looked
from his end of the field.
Murphy paced the dressinq room after his
team's loss, obviously frustrated. Few words

game. Then Mark DeCamilla limped to the sidelines,
leaving Simmons, Heywood and Charlie Jetton to
handle the running chores.
"Rice got a real good bruise on his leg, but it's all
right," Dietzel revealed. "The reason he couldn't
play any more is because the bruise was so extensive.
There was no way to deaden it. He just couldn't walk.
"Memphis State really wanted this game," he
continued. "I knew we would never be out of the soup.
It really is a shame that someone had to lose. Spook
and I agreed that both teams had to win. I said it
would be one heck of a win, and it was.
"I was impressed with Memphis State before,
during and after the game. They are a top notch
football team. This game was a big pivotal point. Now
the trip back to Columbia will only take three and a
half minutes. If you lose, it takes seven hours,"
Dietzel concluded.

were spoken except in exclamations and it was a long while
before the Tiger mentor felt like analyzing the game.
"Boy, there were a lot of licks passed out there. It really was a
hard hitting football game. Both teams came to play tonight.
"It was a big game for both Carolina and us, but they won it,
and that's what counts.
"I won't say that a defeat like this is any more or less
demoralizing than one like we had to Mississippi," said Murphy.
"Any defeat is demoralizing, but we can't look at this game as a
season breaker. We've got too much at stake--too much to look
forward to. We have a lot of games left yet.
"Any time you hold a team to one touchdown you're supposed
to beat them," said Murphy, "but after a hard hitting game like
that you never have to hold your head down.
"I think both teams played defense extremely well. We knew
they (Carolina) were real strong defensively because everyone
has had trouble with them. I don't believe anyone has just taken
the ball and stuck it down their throats,'" said the Tiger coach.
"As far as the quick kicks were concerned, I wanted to keep the
ball away from (Dick) Harris as much as possible. He's the
number one kick returner in the nation and I didn't want him to
break one.
"The big play," said Murphy searching for the breaking point,
'was when they (Carolina) made the first down after the third
and ten situation."
This was the third quarter situation in which Morris ran for nine
yards and Robbie Davis sneaked for one to turn the fourth and
one situation.
