EDITORIALS Everyone must help SGA and the USC Administration co-sponsored the Academic Atmosphere Conference held this weekend at Camp Gravatt in Aiken. This conference was an idea that developed from the Cherry Grove 'Think Tank' held last Spring. Its purpose was to gather a representative group of students, faculty and administration in order to discuss ideologies for improvement of the academic atmosphere at USC. The conference was definitely productive from the standpoint of accomplishing the initial purpose. Some 100 persons assembled and discussed the problems present in the academics of the University from all sides of the picture. Most had definite ideas and open minds. Some of the proposals are im mediately pertinent while others are only feasible through timely changes in physical and academic structure. The job of bringing the outlining problems to the surface has been done. Now the students, faculty and the administration must take note. The final report of this conference has been referred to an executive committee in order to compile in more depth all that has been discussed. When the final report of this committee comes down November 1, a big job will face the entire Carolina Community. Don't let this conference, which was well planned for a definite beneficial purpose and productive with respect to the whole University, go to waste. Rusty Robinsen Insight: Bil Hend Blacks (Editor's note: This is the last in a series of two columns by Bill Henderson of the Afro-American Studies Dept.) Statewide young Blacks under 18 have registered at a higher rate than any other group. Are we not participants in the on-going, political developments of the State and nation? We therefore can't be ruled out because we're not in volved. When it comes to talking about the father and leader of the nation, we need somebody who will em brace and treat all the children of the nation alike. Someone who is not afraid of varying colors and national origin. In surveying the picture, a Black candidate seems best qualified to treat everybody fairly regardless of color. Who other than a Black man can win the confidence of the Spanish speaking people, of the brown and yellow people? Another way of looking at the very same thing is to look at the array of colors in the Black community today. It is therefore not strange to have very dark parents in a family and very light skinned children, as is true in my family. No father of such a family would be the least bit upset by such an accurance. But now on the other hand it is not very hard to imagine what the reaction of a white father who has a dark skinned child. The point here is that our country needs a father who can in fact be sensitive and responsible to all of the people and children of the nation. We need someone as the Letter USC student eulogized by roommate MR. FARRELL: I feel sure you would have liked my roommate, Bill Martin, had you known him. For he was not so complex in character as many of us are, but neither was he so confused by the problems of life. Lest Friday night, just four miles shy of being home, Bill was killed by another automobile that ran out of control. He died, never knowing what hit him, while returning to those persons and places he thought the most of. To him, life was not just a question of where he stood, but rather in what direction he was moving; and for that I shall miss him dearly. Bill was a junior here at Carolina and a member of the Naval ROTC. At the time of his death he was working towards a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Marine Corps. His passing will be a great loss and tragic end to a dream never realized. This afternoon (Monday) William F. Martin Jr. was burled in Jacksonville, N.C. For those ot us who knew him, he remained a quietaird.inodest student. Buit lik~ many quiet young men, he mMt htd rerson politically father of our country who can utilize all of the harnessed energy and talent of women. Currently females make up 51 per cent of the population, yet they compose less than one per cent of political representations. As for the Black community we've known for a long time that women had sense and ability. Our families have often been headed by women so we know ....females make up population, yet the than one per ce, representations. As community we vi had sense and resu from first-hand experience that they can make decisions. It therefore seems to me that a Black president would be best qualified to utilize the talents and energies of the one hundred million women in the nation. The next question that comes to mind is it possible to elect a Black president? Yes, it very possible to elect a Black man president. A country of 15 million Blacks, 10 million foreigners, 50 million women, 20 millibn new 18 year-old voters, as well as any number of whites of good will spells victory for any man who will speak out for justice. Ironically, of s to the e struggles with a smile, and sought self-improvement through the preserving labors of hard work. In an effort to better himself he enriched the lives of all those around him; and surely, we could ask no more of a friend. DALLAS BLACKISTON New left reflects stated evils MR. FARRELL: Unfortunately, most of our new left rhetoricians never shut up long enough to see that they not only mirror but magnify the evils they so vociferously deplore. I refer specifically to their spray-painted admonitions to "avenge Attica" and "f--k ROTC" scrawled around campus. Fortunately, I am a con servative, and therefore, as your editorial of Sept. 27th implies, not subject to the so-called "open minded liberalism" that can conceive avenging Attica or f--king ROTC to constitute creative social action. Somehow, conservative tradition has always emphasized individual responsibility, i.e., my own per sonal responsibility to work with pillerp, fQr creative, constructive sneil,l'and political reform. The involved course, these same groups make up significant numbers in the large states which have the largest number of electoral votes. But in the larger sense there seems to be a moral responsibility or the forces of good will to seek election to this high office. If the forces of evil represented by Gov. Wallace, could seek this office every four years until he is now in 51 per cent of the .y compose less Ft of political for the Black known...women onsibility.... a position to decide the leader of the country, then we have just as much or more responsibility to push a progressive and forward looking program. It seems to me very clear that a positive alter native must be provided in the national election. Somebody who really will work to end racism and poverty and hunger. Somebody who will really seek to utilize the energies of the young to the women. Somebody indeed who will in fact be the father of the entire nation. I think a Black president is a first beginning. litor vengeance is just thaO-violence and no more justified than violence in any other form. It is time that we cease to polarize ourselves by claiming rights because we are black, white, male, female, young, old etc. and work together for the rights belonging to all as citizens of the United States. Unfortunately few will do anything, because social reform is achieved more by hard work and getting your hands dirty than by throwing words around.
