New found mon Student : Ry KARY NEWTON Staff Writer Have you ever noticed the Sunshine Laundry and Cleaners bus stop bench partially covered by vines on North Trenholm Road near Pine Brook? This bench was a place of much excitement at 6 p.m. September 26 for it turned out to be the hiding place for the $1000 in the contest recently held by WCOS radio station. For the past three years WCOS, located on the second floor of the Cornell Arms building, has run this contest giving clues over the air hinting where the money is hidden. Last year it was found on a fire box on a red pole at the corner of Main Street and Laurel Street. The previous year a stop sign on High wayI had the lucky piece of paper taped to it. The Program Director of WCOS. Woody Windham. says he runs this contest for "fun and radio promotion." "The attitudes of the estimated 5000 people hunting for the money seemed to be different this year." he said. "Many people called up just to say they made lots of friends and took some beautiful nature hikes while looking for the money. The contest seemed to be thoroughly enjoyed even by the losers." The winner was Eddie Cobia married USC student. He got in terested in the contest when his wife told him the first three WCOS clues. After looking through phone books and maps and driving around in his car Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday af ternoon. he found the envelope with the note informing him he had won shxn0 and he called WCOS to make arrangements to pick up the money. Windham asked Cobia if he could come to the radio station Monday morning to which Cobia replied. "I have classes all morn ing and then an appointment at 12 p.m." A few minutes later he called back remembering "my COLDS1 COUNTF 18 Hole Champ 1-26 North 15 min frorn Student Rat< Snack Bar Electric Carts Finds prize appointment was at the bank to borrow money." The $1000 will go to the "good cause of paying past bills." A frustrating incident was ex perienced by the man whose house is directly behind the Sunshine Laundry bench. He searched four days and four nights for the money. only to find out later he came within one foot of it every day when he checked his mailbox. Guidance 0 service available The Guidance Center of USC College of Education is now open to aid junior high and high school students in planning post high school education. career selection and personal adjustment. Services are free, provided Monday through Friday. late af ternoons and evenings, and Saturday mornings by a staff of qualified counselors. The coun selors work under the direction of USC faculty members. Parents must give written permission for their child to be counseled at the center. The center includes a vocational information library as well as bulletins from numerous colleges. Interest in ventories and achievement, ap titude and reading skills tests are also available. Although primary emphasis is on vocational and career coun seling for students. grades 7-12, free counseling services are also available to persons of other ages.
