VD contra
15 seconds
By KARIN BURCHSTEAD
Staff Writer
Every 15 seconds someone in the
nation contracts a venereal
disease and every year 3,000
deaths are reported from syphilis
alone.
According to George D. Bennett,
VD investigator at the Richland
County Health Dept., young adults
do not know enough about the
symptoms of VD to stimulate their
contacting a physician.
"We want to saturate the state
this month with VD information to
emphasize the dangers and
symptoms of this disease," he
said.
"There is a terrific amount of
VD in colleges and even high
schools in this area," Bennett said.
"We're not pointing a finger at any
one school; most of the schools are
gF*444," he added.
Last year South Carolina ranked
fifth in the nation in gonorrhea and
eihth in syphilis.
Of the 15,312 cases reported last
year in South Carolina, 6,320 cases
occurred in young adults between
the ages of 20-24. Teen-age VD,
which has increased 78 per cent
since 1966, represented 3,473 cases.
In Richland County, 1,859 cases
were reported.
Bennett blames the increased
occurrence of VD on more sexual
freedom and the advent of the pill.
With the removal of the fear of
pregnancy, many people do not

think of VD as a consequence, he
said.
"We're not accusing young
people of being promiscuous,"
Bennett said. "There are 22 million
young people in this country, and
less than 5 per cent are infected,"
said Bennett.
"What we are saying is that
people who expose themselves
sexually should be very particular
and have an examination if they
even suspect they have been in
fected," he said.
Bennett urged those who can not
afford medical help to come to the
health department.
"Everything here is free, and by
a ruling of the attorney general,
there is no possibility that in
formation will be divulged even to
parents," he said. "The records
are kept locked and no one has
to them exespt A
ng with the disease."
Bennett emphasized the
misconception that VD cam be
contracted from door knobs,
drinking glasses or toilet seats. He
said that the organisms causing
VD can not live in the air over 20
seconds.
Public health officials estimate
that only one in every 10 cases of
VD is reported. One in 15 victims of
syphilis will become permanently
crippled heart victims. One in 50
afflicted will develop syphilitic
insanity. One in 100 will lose their
eye sight.
