All week long, the Gamecock
Soothsayer has been plagued with
obnoxious, obscene and downright
disgraceful comments about his
inability to pick USC. After all, he
was right twice last year, choosing
Carolina over Clemson and Wake
Forest. Two out of eleven isn't all
that bad....
Last week, 29-10-2, .744. For the
season, 50-19-2, .724. And two for
two on Carolina decisions.
North Carolina State, with its
enemic defense, faces USC this
weekend. State's defense is so good
that it only allowed Eastern
powerhouse Maryland a mere five
touchdowns, while running up a
total offense of seven points. If
Carolina wins by less than eighteen
points, it will be an upset. USC 31,
North Carolina State 9.
Tennessee has probably the best
trio of linebackers in the nation,
and deep back Bobby Majors
certainly has to rank right up
there. But Auburn has Pat
Sullivan. Take away Auburn's
short pass and you have one thing
left Auburn's long pass. And even
Bobby Majors can't stop that.
Auburn 24, Tennessee 21.

Fresh off of a big win over Army,
Stanford quarterback Don Bunce
looks like he may be trying to
follow the footsteps of Jim

years studying Plunkett. That's
industrious enough to beat Oregon.

Ohio State is still winning as

Jim Mitchell prepares to ha
USC's win over Georgia Tec
Classy M
offensive
By JIM HERSH
Sports Writer
Although the Carolina offense
has been less than formidable in
the Gamecock's first two contests,
the offense does contain some
classy performers. Jim Mitchell is
one of their top rate players.
Last year he pulled in 41 passes
for 180 yards. Also he scored seven
touchdowns on pass receptions,
setting a Carolina single season
record. The senior will have to
have quite a year to equal those
impressive statistics.
The new artificial turf at
Carolina Stadium suits Jim fine.
"If anyone benefits from the Astro
turf it would be the receivers," Jim
remarked. "You can cut better on

it and one step is all you need to
beat the defensive man," he
emphasized.
Commenting on the loss to Duke,
Mitchell related. "It was a tough
loss and we took it hard. But we got
together Sunday to watch the films
and sort of got that game out of our
system. Right now we're looking
forward to NC State."
According to the 5-11, 165 pound
flanker, size is not the important
quality in a receiver. "I don't think
my lack of size is a handicap," he
said. "Speed and good hands are
things a receiver must have."
Incidentally Jim has both.
Defensive backs are the people
Mitchell tries to beat every week.
When asked how NC State plays
their backs Jim said, "Their
defensive backs play a three deep
zone."
Double coverage is the headache
of most good receivers and- Jim
sees his share of double teams. "A
lot of teams flood their zone to the
strong side and basically that's the
same as double coverage," Mit
chell explained.
If. or rather when, the
Gamecocks get their offensive
show started you can bet Jim
Mitchell will be a main feature.
