USC's Paul Dietzel was very, very pleased
about his team's opening win against Georgia
Tech Saturday night. But time to savor one of
Carolina's greatest wins is past. The
Gamecocks face a very impressive Ouke team
Saturday in Durham.
''It was a heck of a win for us," Dietzel said at
his weekly press conference. "But Duke had a
win just like ours. They went down to Tampa
and beat a heavily-favored Florida team 12-6
and they took the fight right to them."
USC assistant Pride Ratteree, who scouted
the Duke-Florida game, was high in his praise
of the Blue Devils, who beat USC 42-38 last year
in the Cockpit.
"Duke lost Leo Hart and Wes Chesson,"'
Ratteree said, "but there are still plenty of
studs In the pasture. They are a strong,
physical team that lines up and runs the ball
right at you. They only passed seven times
against Florida."
That type attack is quite different from the
past three years when Hart, the ACC's all-time
passing leader, teamed up with Chesson, the
all-time ACC receiving king, for many
dramatic pass completions.
This year new head coach Mike McGee has

210-pound fullback Steve Jones as the key of
fensive performer. Jones, a junior, gained 204
yards on 40 carries against the Gators. That is
five more carries than the USC school record.
"Duke played a fine game," Dietzel said.
"Defensively they're trim and mean, they go
after you. That win at Florida was unexpected.
It has them and the community fired-up. We'll
never play a more fired-up team than the one
we'll face Saturday. And we're playing them in
their own backyard.
"Jones is a fine runner but they have a strong
supporting cast,'' Dietzel continued. "It'll be a
supercharged team and we'll have to play
super to win."
Speaking of his own team Dietzel said that
Glen Morris will start at quarterback. "Other
than that,' he said,' "the same teams will
play."
Dietzel was unsatisfied with his offensive
production against Georgia Tech, but ap
groaching that realistically, pointed out that
seven of the ten interior positions in the first
two lines were manned by boys with no
previous experience.
"The boys that never played before got a real
tough test in the first game," Dietzel said.
"Tech was a tough football team. They just
didn't seem fired-up for us."
