ment of Irrelevant Information,
while making a good start, has a
long way to go before it reaches the
performance level of the rest of the
Registrar's Office.
As for the cards themselves, you
may not be aware of the fact, but
many students are copying their
names and social security num
bers from the IBM printout on the
top of the cards. I know that the
ob.ject of the game is to make the
registrant write the same in
formation enough times so that he
forgets it, but perhaps punching
the cards without printing the
information on the top will raise
the confusion level higher than
simple redundancy.
The Dean's and Registrar's
checkout stations were, on the
whole. well planned - plenty of
confusion, lines wandering all over
the place, lack of signs, and so on.
The idea of having one line for the
15.journalism students and one line
for the 1500 graduate students, was
perhaps, a little too democratic,
but let's not quibble over details. I
did notice that some of the stations

(Editor's note: The following
column originally appeared in the
Indiana Daily Student. It was
written by Russ Kennedy, an IDS
staff writer. The story is fictitious.)
Ed Russell is an above-average
student, well-liked by his friends,
and involved in numerous extra
curricular activities.
Russell is an addict.
Every afternoon and evening,
Russell returns to his apartment
and "turns on." He has never
taken drugs, but is psychologically
addicted to his television set.
He is one among many who is a
user of what the New York Times
calls "a cultural barbituate...an
electronic drug."

were manned by two or three
people. You must watch out for this
sort of thing, too much of it and you
will speed up, instead of slowing
down operations. Fortunately
everyone was crowded together so
that they couldn't work too well, so
not too much time was gained.
The confusion of the fee
assessment, cashier's, and ID
validation stations was, perhaps,
your best effort. Lines wandering
all over the place, traffic cutting
through lines, and best of all, that
guy standing up and shouting in
formation. I bet that only a few
people heard him. I shudder to
think of the lack of confusion of the
announcement had been made
over the PA system. Of course
giving the student the idea that he
is incapable of doing higher
mathematics problems such as '3
hours at 20 dollars an hour equals
X dollars," does keep the
university view clearly to the fore.
The line of obstacles after the ID
validation was a good idea, but you
made a mistake by leaving the exit
doors open. Once the registrant
could actually see daylight, a large
part of the confusion generated by.
the 16 clubs, 32 optional fee
st ations, and 1500 vital posters was
lost .
It is my hope that you act on
these suggestions to improve the
registration operation, but even if
you don't I want you to know that I
think you did a splendid job this
year. I would have thanked you in
person. hut unfortunately, I have
been down with a severe case of
mental and physical exhaustion
since September :3.

diction
His friends have commented
that since Russell became ad
dicted he is listles and "a loner."
"Ed doesn't talk to us anymore.
He just hurries home to watch his
set," said sophomore Susie Mc
Cormick.
Russell's doctor has reported
Russell has developed an unusual
swelling of his thumb and two
adjoining fingers and a marked
redness of the eyes.
Dr. Jones further remarked on a
biological deviance within his
patient as a result of his addiction.
"Ed has developed a pattern of
feeding and excreting at fifteen
minute intervals due to the
television's commercial breaks."
Russell's grades, however, have
not dropped due to his use of the
"electronic drug."
"I've perfected a reading system
of- comprehension and speed
during station breaks. For
example, I average 161 lines of
Shakespeare per'-break," said
Russell.
Russell's addiction began duritg
his childhood. He felt that one
.person was responsible for getting
him "hooked."
"Captain Kangaroo has got to be
the biggest pusher. The neigh
borhood kids took me out behind
the garage and forced me to watch
the good Captain. His keys jingling
at the opening of the show were the
first things to attract me.
"During a high school party, my
friends got me hooked on 'Laugh
In' and Johnny Carson. By the
time I got to college. I was a
goner," continued Russell.
Asked if there was any hope for
his addiction, Russell said, "No. I
just got connected with cable
television this week, so I could get
more stations."

The "Free University " concept
is that formal education and
education methods are limiting the
creativity of the individual, so that
the individual is not really well
educated. .Students of Free~

wherein the individual is given the
chance to be creative in an un

As one student stated, "We will

learn to follow our own ideas
creatively."
