Gutenberg experiment The final I by HARRY HOPE if you're looking for something funny t6 read, don't waste your time anymore here. If you're not interested in what this column is all about, read the sports pages. All semester, The Gutenberg Experiment has sought to lampoon those persons who, by some act or attitude, or even on general principle, lend themselves to easy lam pooning. In these columns, the Gutenberg has tried to stick a few stuffed shirts, liven up the editorial pages and perhaps present some thought-provoking pieces. Hopefully (no pun intended), readers have paid attention to what 4he Gutenberg has had to say. Many have paid attention, and they have called it f "libelous," "character assassination," "journalistically unethical," and so forth. So we made a lead-free gasoline: Lead-Free Arboco. It also works fine in many of the 2 mIllion college students' older cars that don't require a premium fuel. And for those new and older cars that do have high Yon expect more from American a jutenberg which makes us feel good. After all, that way we know we are reaching someone. We have enjoyed writing, but are not satisfied with about 85 percent of what has been printed. But then,neither has anybody else. This is not the last column. It is merely a kind of "good bye" at the end of the year. And The Gutenberg Ex periment would like to make a public apology to all those people who have not asked for apologies, up to and In cluding the speaker of the house, Mr. Blatt. If your conceit is such that you did ask for an apology, then you don't deserve one. Now that apologies have been made, you can expect the same thing all over again when The Gutenberg Ex periment returns (again hopefully). Your paper is so one-sided, I cannot understand why yod even bother to print on the middle and right hand side of the page. But since you do claim to be the "student newspaper" of U.S.C., perhaps you should at least at tempt to feign to be so. Why do you ignore your tax paying readers when they write in, but hunt down news of Thomas Broadwater to put on the front page? The only reason you publicized Thomas Broad water, a socialist, pro-Viet Cong candidate for Governor of S. C. who failed to get even 3 per cent of the vote, was because you hoped to promote the ideas and political future of this man. You had every right to print the letter from Brett Bursey. But why cater to fugitive criminals and ignore the letters that your forcibly taxed student supporters send in? Do we have to take part in your "war of liberation" to merit space in your trash sheet? Why did "the student newspaper of U.S.C." ignore prisoner of war week on campus? Over 2,000 st udents signed petitions to be sent to Hanoi in protest of their inhumane treatment of Americans. A former prisoner of war spoke to students on campus, but you didn't bother to mention it. You profess to be believers in "power to the people". Why don't you give us people the power to decide on whether or not to fund the GAMECOCK? If you had to survive on voluntary sub scriptions, you would sink into the slime with which you have chosen to surround yourselves. If your paper was to be sold voluntarily, it would be necessary for you to conform yourselves to- student thinking in order to sell. The present system of subsidizing the GAMECOCK allows your other wise full-of-holes ideas to float. It's we students who are being oppressed--you (The GAMECOCK) are the true op pressors. EDWARD C. FENNELL Shut-down legislature l)EAR MRl. HEEBE: Sol Hiatt 's recent lambasting of the USC newspaper, the Gamecock, so "a disgrace to the Universit y and to the state of South Carolina" brings to mind the recent and genuine disgrace concerning the state legislature. The nonpartisan, nonprofit Citizens Conference on State Legislatures rated the South Carolina legislature, in which Sol Hiatt plays a "prominent" role, fourty-fourth out of the fifty states in the country. This rating, while not the final word on the sub.ject, does Indicate the legislature leaves much to be desired in: ef tectiveness. The Gamecock, conversely, has received the highest award offered from the reputable AUl American Intercollegiate Press AssociatIon for the last nine semesters. Judging from the effectiveness of the two organizations, It Is our opinion that the State Legislature should shut down Its present operations not the Gamecock, contrary to the venerable Blatt's Inclinations.
