VtIC.M Sol Blatt lambasts Gamecock Sol Blatt, speaker of the S.C. House of Representatives, lam basted the GAMECOCK yester day, according to the Columbia Record. 'I. think that the great GAMECOCK as published by those who control it is a disgrace to the University and to the state of South Carolina," Blatt said. lie said that if he had the authority to stop GAMECOCK publication, he would exercise it. The Columbia Record quoted Blatt as saying "I wouldn't let anybody stay at the University who had anything to do with publishing it 'GAMECOCK)." Blatt said that anyone involved in the publication of the GAMECOCK "with any in telligence" would see that the ;Ia,student newspaper is a disgrace and that it has hurt the university with legislators at the State House. Student body president, Harry Walker was quoted as saying. "It is a possibility that the GAMECOCK will be shut down.. .I feel the Gamecock is a student newspaper and they (students) should be the only people to shut it (town. 'If it is shut down by anyone else, and if the students rally to have the paper opened. I would do everything I can to get the paper back on campus." Walker said. .Julianne Still, vice president of the student body and president of the student senate said, "We at the university owe our very existence to the state legislature, but we did u I ..rrealize that Sol Blatt could even run student organizations." Still continued, "We of student government consider the Gamecock a student newspaper for students." She said that resolutions will be coming out of the student senate today sup porting the GAMECOCK and condemning the Board of Student Publications and communications. Miss Still said she hoped the outside com'munity respects the right of freedom of the press, adding, "obviously, some of them don't." on Bifani, president of the nersity Union. said that the G (A M ECOCK is vital to the Union which sponsors lectures, concerts, films and arranges different types of social functions. "The Union depends greatly on the G A MECOCK for publicity." Tlhe Hoard of Trustees will meet on May 27 to discuss the status of the GA MECOCK, and decide what action, if any, should be taken . concerning the paper. Spears ex to annoum An announcement of his can didacy for the state legislature is expected to be made by Mike Spears, former USC student body president, within the next couple of weeks. Spears has reportedly been approached by members of the state Democratic party in an effort to pull the t8-21 year-old-vote in the special House elections. The D)emocratic primary to fill two vacant house seats will be held in mid-July and the General special election is in September.
