Terps Nip Carolina

Maryland and USC turned the ACC championship meet into a
dual affair Saturday night with Maryland out distancing the
Gamecocks by five points on the strength of its dominance in the
field events.
The Gamecocks' balanced attack on the field and track was no
match for the Terps' presence in the field. Maryland piled up 56
points in that area to catch Carolina in the stretch and
established a solid lead with two events remaining.
The Terps swept all five places in the pole vault to grab 16
points. In the javelin and discus they scored 11 points each and
got eight points in both the high jump and shot put.
Four ACC records were recorded in the finals. Maryland
performers Jack Hanley and Jim Williamson set records of 58-11
in the shot put. and 15-9 in the pole vault, respectively. Duke's
Roger Beardmore won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with an ACC
record 9:01.7.
Bob Wheeler of Duke was the meets outstanding athlete. He set
an ACC record of 4:02.7 in the mile run and tied the 880 record of
1:48.2.
Trailing the Terps' 71 and Carolina's 66 points were Duke with
41, North Carolina with 40, Clemson and N.C. State with 24 and 16,
respectively.
The Terps' complete dominance of the ACC in track and field
has now stretched to sixteen years. Maryland has won 17 of the 18
ACC championships in the conference's existence.
Carolina's chances to upset the Maryland dynasty rested on its
power on the track. The Gamecocks captured both relays, the
high hurdles, and had a strong one two punch In the 220-yard
dash.
Jim Small, Dickie Harris, Mike Haggard, and Keith Eidson
claimed the 440-yard relay at :41.7. Harris, Bob Dempsey, Jim
Schaper, and Bob Kaczka won the mile relay with a time of
3:15.8.
Billy Novo claimed the high hurdles with 14.1. He was aided by
the absence of Duke's Jeff Howser.
in the 220 ELdsun and Small took first and second place. Eidson
won though both ran the course in 22.4.
The Gamecocks placed 16 of their members in the finals--two
more than Maryland's 14--but captured only four first places to
Maryland's five.
