VOL LXI - NO. 0 University of South CarolI . Columba,'S. C. 2920 Manday, May 17, 1971
The Board. of Student Publications and Communications feels that a
student newspaper is vital to the operation of an institution of higher
education. This board hereby reaffirms its belief in the freedom of the
press and that student editors be given the freedom to publish those
0,.aterials which'they deem of interest to the student body as a whole. This
board believes the widest degree of latitude should be allowed student
editors for the free discussion of current issues and problems.
.This board has reviewed the content of 'the GAMECOCK this spring
and has found no violations of state or federal publications laws. Ad
ditionally, there are no instances when the board can find serious
abridgements of the University approved Statement of Principles which
have been set forth for the guidance of student communications
managers.
However, complaints from individual Board of Communication
: iembers, students, alumni and university administrators have been
lodged concerning the questionahle taste and journalisic practices of
some material presented in the GAMECOCK. On such matters the board
has counseled wit the editor and passed on to him its concern and the
concern of various readers of the publication. At such times, the
newspaper's editor has been cautioned about adhering to the principles of
good taste and good journalistic practices.
Further, the Board of Publications and Communications does not feel
the GAMECOCK is now adequately serving the communications needs of
.*he University community. In view of the varying interpretations
currently being expressed about the purposes, aims, and functions of the
University's student publications, this board strongly urges that the
administrative and fiscal structures of these organizations be reviewed
with the thought of bringing their procedures more closely in line with
current practices in the field of student journalism.
