'ityan's Daughter" is a good film, but even the best of things gets old after three and a 'f hours, "if tlch you go to see "Ryan's D naughter," some. of the things youli need to bring with you in additio. to admission money are provisions for a week, no-doze and a stack of crying towels. The film is well done, par ticularly the scenic shots of Ireland's rock bound sea coast. The acting on the whole is ex cellent and the story is weak,but believeable. The reason the film becomes tedious ia that no story, no matter how involving or in teresting, can withstand as many emotional ups and downs as Ryan's Daughter" stretches over S.C. pollul date backa lespite the recent clamor, South Carolina's laws to combat water pollution go back to when the state was a British colony, according to a USC law professor. Prof. Charles H Randall, who has just .finished a three-year pro.ect of legal study of South Carolina water resources, says the oldest law on the S.C. books dealing with water pollution was a 17th century statute that prohibited casting Into streams -'any impurities that are poisonous to fish or destructive to their spawn. 'Watching the film, one begins to get the impression that Director David Lean filmed a half dozen possible endings and in, the end could not bring himself to cut a single one of them...Instead, it looks as though Lean strung them all one after the other. In all fairness to "Ryan's Daughter," it is a film worth seeing. The cinematography alone is worth the price of admission. There is one particular scene in which a vicious storm lashes the magnificent rock coast creating some of the best and most exciting scenes I have ever seen on film. No, "Valdez Is Coming" is not the story of an artificial in semination donor. One can look at all this bungling and call it lack of motivation" or just shrug it off. There is another way of looking at the matter--the Peter Principle. As an axiom the principle reads, "In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." As a book, the Peter Principle (William Morrow & Company. 199) can be amusing, camp or thought provoking. The author. Laurence Peters points out through superb satire and logic the reasons people are constantly messing up and what can be done about it. His basic premise is that a person is hired to do what his abilities best suit. Somewhere along the line this person will be promoted to a position beyond his talents. Eventually he gets around to everyone and the theme of his book loses a little humor. Although his medium is satire, the author makes his point without logic Ilaws and with a bite--you are almost certainly a victim of 'entire-life-incompetence". I you are perceptive enough to begin looking at the matter through Peters' eyes, you are ready for ihe solutions.
