Guidelines for the permanent
establishment of the Con
temporary University (CU)
program were approved by the
[aculty senate April 7.
Students in the CU program
conduct independent study and
research projects in their major or
minor fields for one semester.
According to USC guidelines, a
si udent in CU would receive a
maximum of 15 credit hours, no
more than nine of which can be
applied to his major. Each
semester 80) full-time un
dergraduate students will be
selected. Freshmen are not
eligible for CU.
Each CU participant has an
adviser, generally a member of the
school or college in which the
st udent receives most of his
credits.
-- The adviser will assign the grade
or the project if the student has
completed two noncredit
seminars. one on approaches to
research methods, analysis and
criticisms, the other on ap
proaches to interdisciplinary
inquiries.

yesterday to decrease the size of
their delegations.
In other actions Francis Marion
State College and Coastal Carolinn
delegations were seated by

Columbia College abstained while
each of the other delegations ap

No application deadline has been
established yet. All applications
will he reviewed by the CU director
and associate directoor. If they
think the project proposal is un
clear or incomplete, the student
has two weeks to revise and
resubmit it.
' The selection committee,
composed of an advisery board
member, a past participant in CU
and a USC faculty member who
has served as a CU adviser, will
interview each applicant. The
selection committee's evaluation
will he sent to the advisery board,
who will choose the participants.
The student's dean or department
head will grant final approval.
The CU program at USC will be
headed by a -faculty director,
chosen annually by the advisory
board. He will be assisted by an
associate director.

secretarial help and so on."
Pat Partin (Citadel made a
motion which allows for the for
mat ion of a committee to study and
possibly revise the SCSSL con
stitution. The motion passed with
no opposition.
Ken Shigley (Furman)
suggested that the officers of each
house form committees to revise
and draft rules for each body and
that these committees adopt these
rules.
I )ean Hall ( USC), lobbyist for
SCSSla. presented a status report
on his position. He said that the
student lobbist should register at
the same time other groups
register.
Hall said that he registered in
