Godzilla and kingdomcome The Gamecock printed an editorial on March 31 titled "Fornication and the Law." The immediate result was a varied, and in some instances, reactionary response. The editorial sparked comment from many individuals both on and off-campus. Critics of the editorial have called It obscene, in poor taste, unjustified, disgusting or offensive. Others have stated that they thought it was timely, made its point, funny, relevant, tasteful or justified. The administration and off-campus response has generally been condemning. Student response has been favorable. The issue is not whether the editorial "per se'" was good or bad - the issue is who we write for, whois our audience and who pays for the Gamecock. The Gamecock is not published for the benefit of the administration, parents, the state legislature, the Board of Women Visitors, the Board of Trustees, Sol Blatt, or the faculty, but fcr the students of the University of South Carolina. The Gamecock is partially supported by student activity fees with-the balance paid by advertising revenue. We would like to think that Godzilla and kingdom come read the Gamecock (the journalistic masterpiece that it is), but it isn't written for them. This publication is designed to meet the needs and tastes of an easily defined group -the students of the University of South Carolina. Before you split for the holidays we feel that you should be cognizant of a few facts of life. If you are headed for the Myrtle Beach area - BEWARE - the cops have a talent for throwing people in jail. They get their jollies and bread by putting the big royal screw to students. The Fort Lauderdale cops are a more benevolent breed but they aren't exactly liberal. Dope is illegal in the Bahamas (as elsewhere) and if you are driving anywhere, don't get strung out on the highways. Take care, keep it clean and have a good vacation - and above all don't get caught and LOSE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE. G amecock T HE GAME COCK is published trn-weekly during the fall and spring semesters and weekly during the summer semesters with the exception of university holidays and exam periods. Sub scription rates are $7 per year or $3 per fall and spring semesters and S1 for both summer sessions. Bulk copies are $6 per 100. THE GAMECOCK this year received $39,000 from the student activity fund, entitling full-time students to a subscription to the paper.
