A hobby of 'collecting ancient
coins has led a USC English
professor to write a book covering

that period coins were "very
shoddy."
The professor. Dr. George C.
Brauer Jr.. began collecting
classical coins 10 years ago. and
-noticed coins from the third
century A.D. to be especially
sleazy."
'Roman coins were originally
1w per cent silver." Brauer said.
'But these coins from the third
century have only splotchy
coatings of silver." The professor
decided to find out the reasons
behind this had coinage and is now
completing "The Broken Mosaic."
