Friday night saw the Gamecocks
continue their hitting problems,
but Saturday afternoon, April 3,
the pitching and batting power got
together for a solid 4-0 win.
Alan Hilliard gave up only three
hits in Friday's loss, but his
teammates could only manage
four off Georgia Southern pitcher
John Arden. Hilliard absorbed his
second loss of the season despite
his three hit, nine strikeout per
formance, 3-2.
Tar Heels
ACC stat
North Carolina's National In
vitation Tournament champions
finished on top in three of the six
major team categories in the
Atlantic Coast Conference
basketball race this season and
placed in the first division in the
other three, according to the final
statistics released by Com
missioner Bob James.
Coach Dean Smith's Tar Heels,
the first ACC team ever to capture
the prestigious NIT crown, won
their fourth straight league scoring
Etitle with an 84.6 average. They
also finished first in field goal
percentage with a record .522
figure and compiled the best
average scoring margin over
opponents with a 12.8 mark.
The .522 field goal percentage
figure marks only the third time an
ACC club has made good on better
than 50 percent of its field goal
tries in a single season. The
previous best was a .517 mark
compiled by the 1966 Tar Heels.

''Georgia Southern has a fine

our four games with them this year
is a very good addition to our

part the tying rally in the first
game for the Gamecocks, and
added two hits in the second. The
Carolina shortstop smashed a
double to right center to bring in
two runs late in the third inning. An
error in the sixth, however, shot
down the Gamecocks in their
fourth loss of the season.
Anderson has brought his
average up to .270 with seven hits
in his last 16 at bats." At the first of

Richardson's tactics of
spreading out his hitters instead of
packing the top of the order seem
to be working well for USC Billy

Charlie Davis of ..ake Forest,
who earlier was voted player-of
the-year honors in the Atlantic
Coast Conference, topped off his
brilliant collegiate career by
capturing both the league's in
dividual scoring championship and
the free throw percentage crown
while JSC's Tom Owens earned his
third rebound title.
According to the final figures,
released by CoMmissioner Bob
James. Davis scored 690 points in
26 games for a 26.5 average, the
ninth highest mark in the 18 years
of 2ACC cage play. The New York
City native, who earned all-ACC
first team honors three successive
years, increased his point
production each season. He
averaged 22.8 as a sophomore and
25.5 as a junior.
John Roche of USC finished
second behind Davis with a 21.6
average while Duke's Randy
D)enton placed third at 20.4. The
three top scorers were the only
players to account for more than
64N0 points during the season. It was
the second runnerup spot for
Roche, who finished second his
sophomore year.
