Harry Walker won. The people
won. Yet the victory has not been
realized. And the ultimate victory
will not be realized until the
stagnant structure we call student
government is taken out of the
graveyatd and revived.
Walker does indeed have an
immense task before him, a task
that has loomed above us and has
been hand ed to numerous student
body presidents. They have failed
to absolve our student government
of the problems that plague it.
Let us hope Walker does not fail.
As I have said before, Walker's
biggest asset is so-called inex
perience within our student
government. This has kept him out
of the petty issues that seem to find
a home in our student government.
Walker has a. 10-point program
which would do a great deal to
alleviate many of the problems of
our university. It calls for changes
both within the student govern
ment and in the entire Carolina
community'

The question is now,. however
where do we. go-from here? For
ward, we say. The future is before
us, but the future has been before
other presidents and those futures
rapidly became the past, a past ,
filled with empty promises.
Hopefully, we go forward. We go
forward to -a plateau that few
student governments hAve topped:
a government for and of the
students.
To reach this plateau, we
suggest that Walker spend time
examining the student government
then discarding all the un
necessary deadwood.
A suggestion to Walker: don't be
afraid to step on toes within the
student government. After all, it
has been these same toes that have
been stepping on the students
whom they are supposed to be
working for.
Another suggestion: when
working with a committee, time is
important. It is time' we make
tomorrow today. Recom
mendations and legislation have a
tendency to get bogged down in
committee. So a little pushing
won't hurt.
