Friday night, the University will
present Mason Proffit, a very good
group that could be called anything
h om country rock to a head trip.
Mason Proffit will probably be
as good or better than McKendree
Spring, or New York Rock, both of
which were very good concerts.
Mason Profit will also probably
play to a half empty house. Why?
ickets are cheap, $1.00 with I.D.,
the Township Auditorium is an
intimate place, perfect for a real
concert and the group is good.
The reason why ticket sales are
slow is not obvious. What is ob
vious is that most USC students
don't care. The night after Mason
Profitt, Blood Sweat and Tears
will perform at the Coliseum. This
concert will feature a group that is
terrible in concert, is charging
outrageous prices and is per

for live concerts.
The crowds will probably break
down the doors to pay to see Blood,
Sweat and Tears and stay away in
droves for a concert that may be
one of the best entertainment bets
ever to hit town.
No more than 2,600 USC students
have ever attended a concert,
either in Township or the
Coliseum. We scream for control of
our coliseum, yet refuse to support
it. We won't even support en

excellent alternatives to higli
priced and small performanced
concerts.
'T'he Coliseum is OURS. USC
owns it, students theoretically
should get first use.
Who is willing to support it is the
question.

In the Friday edition of the
Gamecock.
:Friday various organizations like
SMC. Young Americans for
Freedom, Student Union officials
and campus religious societies
interviewed by the Gamecock will
say what they do to help G.I.'s in
Columbia.
Some of the hottest issues on
campus revolve around soldiers:
the war in Indochina, volunteer
military and beating the draft.
Radicals and reactionaries march
endlessly shouting concern for
soldiers and politicians of all
stripes can't do enough for, or to
them.

'ew people realize that aside
f rom marching and dying. soldiers
have a hell of a lot of spare time to
fill up. Various organizations like
Ihe I ISO or [led Cross, get lois of
publicity about all they do for
G I 's. but one may question their
effectiveness when so many
soldiers don't even know or care
where they are located.
Any weekend you can see hun
dreds of soldiers pounding Main
Street being hustled by pawn shop
owners and getting hassled by
M f- 's and city police. Soldiers
stare from behind filmy windows
of cheap bars and resturants that
sound like the penny arcade of any
beach.
Here in the honky-tonk at
mosphere soldiers are welcome.
partially because they don't mind
paying a buck a beer and partially
because they are not welcomed
,anywhere else.
While soldiers usually frequent
Main Street at night. they have
shown preference for the USC
campus.

campus side of town? On the
whole. it's safe to say that they are
not as well received by student
haunts like Campus Club. Don's
and the Opus as they are uptown.
While the Opus admits soldiers,
bot h lion's and Campus Club have
policies designed to keep G.I.'s out.
The managements of these places
have many good reasons for ex
cluding soldiers. but it all boils
down to this: soldiers don't mind
paying a buck a beer. but all they
really want to buy is a ticket out of
town. headed for home.
Soldiers usually don't care.
They don't care if they insult your
date. they don't care if you think
the y're vulgar and they aren't
atraid of getting into a brawl. All
week long they train to beat ass
and on the weekend. faced with the
trustration of constant and
universal rejection, they
sometimes do.
The most common complaint of
near campus bars is that anytime
there's trouble. it's usually
t racea ble to a soldier. A bartender
in the Campus Club said that in all
the time he's tended bar. every
light he'd been in involved a
soldier.
The complaint of the Campus
Club is the same as all the rest ;
soldiers have a tendency to get
drunker. to be louder and be more
beligerant than a student normally
would.
Everyone. including most
soldiers. understands that GI's
are subjected to intense pressure
during the week. When they are
able to leave Fort Jackson. they
are anxious to blow off some
seI am. even it it's at the expense of
an innocent passerhy. When asked
what he thought of some USC girls'
lear -M soldiers. one G.I. said. "I
dlon't blame them. I don't want to
harm anyone. but there are a lot of
guys who don't care." Asked why
they tear or avoid soldiers. one
coed said. "''hey always come on
so strong. I'm not really afraid of
them as much as I don't want to be
bothered saying no."
Some G L's aren't as un
derstanding. "Four months ago I
was a student. Now, though I'm
,till the same person. nobody'll
even talk to me."
