An explosive Gamecock track
team traveled to Greenville this
past weekend and competed in the
News-Piedmont Relays-a meet
that was an exciting preview of
things to come in Southeastern
competition this year.
''Although there is no team score
it will be the first opportunity this
year to run against the very best
competition.' West commented
before the meet. "This is what we
want and it will be interesting to
see how we do. he went on to
elaborate.
The Carolina squad did well and
placed in eleven events. Forrest
Broom won in the discus with a 156
loot throw. and placed fifth in the

In winning their sixth straight,

decision. Tommy Gainey jut
missed high scoring honors, as he

Gainey with 16, while Stalvey and

strengthening their bid as the
Southeast's best rugby team.

seven players broke into the
scoring column, as Carolina
posted their fifth victory in as
many outings.
Jack Clasen, Ed Rice and
Werner Minshall each tallied
one try, and Dr. Frank Walton
kicked three conversions.
The big win brought
Carolina's season totals to 113
points scored, and only six
scored against them. In their
five games to date, USC has
shut out the opposition three
times, having scored 27 trys to
their opponents' one.
In the. game Saturday, the
majority of the action took
place on Carolina's end of the
fieid. Once again, it was USC's
defense that gave another fine
eflort in the win.
