Whether or not they are the top
lour teams in the nation, UCLA.
Kansas. Western Kentucky and
Villanova.will clash in the NCAA
finals beginning Thursday in
Houston's Astrodome.
Villanova, who crushed
previously undefeated Penn
sylvani in the finals of the
Easte n Regionals, will face
.Western Kentucky, an 81-78
victor over Big Ten Champ Ohio
state. Kansas. Big Eight leader,
will face perennial national
pacesetter UCLA in the other
semifinal bout, with the winners
meeting each other for the national
title on the following Saturday.
Penn had taken all three
previous contests with intercity
rival Villanova. Such was not the
case Saturday, as the Wildcats
took off like a rocket and never
stopped. Paced by Howard Por
ter's *5 points and 15 rebounds,
Penn never could get untracked.
Up 43-22 at the half, Villanova just
didn't let up in dealing the Quakers
a 9o-47 shellacking.
sharp contrast to the events at
Raleigh. Ohio State, upset
conquerers of Marquette, forced
Western Kentucky into overtime
before bowing. The Buckeyes, who
failed to buckle under the pressure
despite starting three sophomores,
stayed close behind the shooting of
Soph. Allan Hornyak.
With only 46 seconds remaining,
iOhio State went into a spread of
fense in hopes of keeping their two
point lead 69-67. But a cross-court
pass by Hornyak went astray and
the Hilltoppers' Clarence .Glover
layed in a bucket with 21 seconds to
play.
But the Buckeyes still had a
chance to pull out the win. Hornyak
took the ball and moved in to take a
twenty foot jumper, a shot he
rfiakes with a great degree of
consistancy, but the ball went in
faces
and out and an extra stanza was
needed.
The overtime period began with
both teams trading buckets twice
to knot the score at 75-all. After
Buckeye Luke Witte, a seven
looter sank a free throw, Glovei
dropped in a two pointer, ending
Ohio State's hopes for a stunning
upset.
It was an uphill fight all the way
for Western Kentucky. They had
been down by as many as 14 in the
first half before settling to a 40-34
deficit at the half. "We didn't go to
the boards early in the first half,"
said winning coach Johnny
Oldham. "We began to move in
that direction late in the first half,
when we cut their lead to six".
"Most of the half we weren't
playing defense, not going to the
boards." he continued. "But Ohio
State has a big strong team that
blocked us off well early in the
game."
Buckeye coach Fred Taylor
agreed that Western's second half
was the deciding factor. "John's
'Oldham) defense took us out of
some of our movement in the
second half," he said. "Sometimes
we had the good shot, but it didn't
go in.
"John's kids are so strong out
there on the boards. They act as if
they own them. But my boys have
come a long way," the Bucks
coach summed up. "I think that we
have put on a real strong showing
this year."
It took a frantic rally for Kansas
to overcome stubborn Drake in the
Midwest regionals. Drake's speed
had led to an eleven point lead, and
it looked threatening for Kansas
coach Ted Owens' Jayhawks. But
the shooting of Dave Robisch and
Roger Brown aided the Big Eight
champs in derailing Drake, 73-71.
Down 38-30 at the half, Kansas
battled back to within three at 51-48

Rohisch then tied it 55-55 with eight
and a half minutes remaining, and
later put the Jayhawks ahead with
a lumper at 6:i-6. Though Drake
continually managed to come
within a single point, they could not
overcome Kansas, who will take a
.5-I record into Houston.
*We told them (his team) at
halftime that if they wanted to go
to Houston. that they would have to
go after it." said a happy Owens
following the win. "And we told
them to quit concentrating on other
things and just go to Dave
lobisch."
Robisch led all scorers with 27
points, was named to the all
tourney team, and was the out
standing player of the regional
matches in Wichita.
'It was a heartbreaking loss
against a very muscular team,"
I)rake coach Maury John com
mented. "We weren't able to get
any of the breaks near the end of
the game."
It was generally considered that
UCLA had a bye going into the
finals at Houston. After all.
11righam Young and Long Beach
State couldn't quite be considered
on the same level with the Bruins.
Maybe Brigham Young wasn't, but
the 49ers threw quite a scare into
the nation's top team.
Sidney Wicks' four free throws in
the final 25 seconds were just
enough to provide UCLA with a
hard earned 57-55 win over Long
leach State. A 2-3 zone by the 49ers
kept UCLA on the short end of the
score. sometimes by 3s many as
eleven points.
With the score tied at 53-53 with
just tour minutes to go, Henry
ifibby and Wicks played catch with
