The Gamecocks' disappointment
at not being in the finals of the
region were evident. Fordham was
up for the game. Carolina went
through the motions.
"There's not a thing to say,"
iUSC head coach Frank McGuire
told reporters after the game.
'They just had more pep when
they needed it than we did."
":We're very happy." Fordam's
Dick Phelps said. "It's good for the
kids. We played to win and I think
that we played great. The press
won for us. it forced a lot of tur
novers." Carolina was guilty of 26
turnovers in the contest.
Phelps said he told his team that
they were going to get "blown off
the floor" after they fell down 10-1.
"I told them they would have to go
alter them. We had to keep
playing. We're very happy to finish
McGuire found one thing that
pleased him in the game. "We
liked the way Riker (Tom) played.
It he'd hit those shots last night
(against Penn) it may have been a
diflerent story."
Riker poured in a career high 39
points in the game. The 6-10 junior
connected on 18-26 field goal at
tempts to put the Carolina shooting
percentage at the 50 per cet mark
for the first time since the regular
season ended. The Gamecocks hit
35-70, but only one other player,
Kevin Joyce, hit half of their shots.
Joyce canned five of ten.
Six-two jumping jack Charlie
Yelverton led a balanced Fordham
attack that saw four players score
over 24) points. Yelverton hit 25
while William Mainor and John
Burick had 23 and Ken Charles
linished with 22. -f
'We're pleased to be able to play
in this tournament," McGuire
said. 'We knew the games would
go to the wire. It's hard to say
about the kids' attitude today.
We've taken a real shellacking this
v'ear.
-We couldn't hold it when We got
our big lead." Phelps said.

The Richmond Times
Dispitch carried a story tht
ISC basketball coach Frank
McGuire will soon be leaving
Carolina for a coaching job at
New York University.
However, a source close to
the basketball team said, "I
don t think he's going. He's very
satisfied at USC. He'll be here
next year."
The author of the story said
that a source near to the For
dham athletic department saw
something that made him "100
percent sure" that McGuire
would be leaving. "There's no
doubt about it." the I-D source
said. McGuire is coming to
NYU. It's just a matter of when
they announce it."
McGuire has already stated
that he had not been offered the
position. but indicated that he
would be willing to talk about it.
Adding to the rumor is the fact
that McGuire is a close friend of
NYU Athletic Director Ben
Carnevale, whose son, Corky,
played for McGuire at Carolina
and is now on the coaching
