Despite some rough going in the
late innings, Carolina rode the
strength of Buddy Caldwell's
seventh inning home run to defeat
stubborn Cincinnati yesterday 7-6.
Bearcat starter Gary Thoinas
had little trouble with the
Gamecocks in the first two innings,
allowing only one base runner, who
was thrown out attempting to steal
second.
Bill Petoskey led off the third
with his first of three hits, but was
thrown out by a wide margin
trying to turn the safety into a
double. Larry Wojcicki reached on
Cipcinatti third baseman Jerry
Lux's error, and one out later, -
outfielder Pete Carpenter walked.
Ronnie Fuller and Butch An
derson followed with successive
singles, scoring both Wojcicki and
Carpenter, thus vaulting USC into
a lead they never relinquished. But
it was close.
Lux drove in the Bearcats' first
run in the fifth, following a walk to
centerfielder Greg Grove.
Carolina struck back in their half
of the sixth, tallying three runs on
three singles wedged around
Cincinatti shortstop Butch Albert's
error.
After Drew Choate had reached
on Albert's miscue. Bruce Pudlock
flew out to right field. Petoskey
added another single, and Wojcicki
scored Choate with another safety.
Then Gamecock starter George

two previous plate appearances,

laced a single to left, scoring both
runners.
Cincinnati came back with two
more to cut the gap to 5-3 but
Caldwell's two run homer over the
left field fence in the seventh gave
USC a 7-3 margin.
But errant pitching and oc
casional fielding lapses allowed
the Bearcats three runs in the
eighth and ninth innings, at the
expense of USC relievers Eddie
Bolton and Phil Houston.
I though we might have an easy
one there for a while," said head
coach Bobby Richardson. "All the
guys that came in today in relief
were starters. They aren't
,primarily relief pitchers."
In discussing Cincinnati's late
surge. Richardson cited pitching
and defense as the major
problems. "I suppose it was the
errors. The3F really did hurt. We'd
walk a guy. then make an error,
then they'd get a hit. The tying run
got put on just like that. Of course,
the only way to solve that ix
through experience."
Richardson rated tnis ottensive
and defensive showing as a good
one. "Cincinnati had a chance to
Nork out before this game. They
were prepared. Our hitting pleased
me. but so did those double plays."
USC turned two, one coming in the
ninth with one out and the bases
loaded. So maybe Bobby
Richardson has been in contact
with Frank McGuire on how to win
ihe 'big ones in the most spec
tacular ways.

Jim Weinzettel continued to hack
away al ACC records in the 100

as Carolina turned in a good
showing against some excellent'

Weinzettel placed second in both
events, which was the highest
placing of any ACC performer,
with times of 2:13.8 in the 200-yard
and 1:00.2 in the 100-yard
breaststrokes.

Ivy school in the final standings
with a fifth place and North
Carolina and USC finished
eleventh and twelfth, respectively.
"All the guys equaled or bettered
their best times," said coach Alan
Gentry of his Gamecocks. "There
wasn't a single slack performance,
and everyone swam real well."
Mike Fox closed out his career
with a senior record in the 100-yard
backstroke leading off the medley
relay. "It was a great way for a
senior to end up," said Gentry.
"I think Tobby Kerr, Jim Villa,
and Jim Wetherhold, all
sophomores, benefited from the
experience of this competition.

The Eastern Regional is in ac
tuality the Ivy League's con
ference tournament and is simply
open to invited competition.
"With those Ivy League teams in
there fighting each other you have
to be ready to swim your best,
because they are 'super psyched'
Gentry continued.
"It is certainly faster than the
ACC. There was not one ACC
victory in any event. You have to .
be at your finest to compete. For
instance Trond (Williams) missed
a turn in the 50-yard freestyle and
that knocked him completely out of
it."
The senior co-captain came back
in the 100-yard freestyle, however,
with a placing in the consolation
race.
On March 25-27 Mike Mayfield,
Jim Wetherhold, Williams, and
Weinzettel, will travel to Ames,
Iowa for the National finals
without the company of Mike
Moffet and John Thoder. Thoder is
still hampered with a back injury
and Moffet has two broken toes.
"The National finals are just no
place to go when you're injured,"
said Gentry.
