Dear Dr. Schoenfeld:
I haven't worn a bra in several
months and dread ever having to
wear one again. But a pretty wise
old guy told me my breasts are
going to be at my waist by the age
of 30.
Is he putting me on? Or is there
really something to what he said?

Would you please tell me if it

sucking of a starving baby, plus an
extreme desire on the part of the
woman, be sufficient to start the
milk coming? Or must the process
be started by an actual birth of 'a
baby'?
ANSWER: Apparently milk
production can sometimes be
initiated even if the woman is
neither pregnant nor the mother of
a new baby. Once my laboratory
assistant found an old but unused
breast pump in a Salvation Army
store on one of her weekly junk
expedition. After using the pump a
couple of days a few drops of
milky substance appeared. I'd
never seen her so happy or excited
before.

children. Discussions of this type
of program have appeared with
some frequency in SCIENCE and
Hentoff's column in the VILLAGE
VOICE. It seems that this
drugging of children may be
disasterously close to good old
cliche ridden 1984.
' The positive a alternative is to
make the learning environment
more responsive to the child
rather than vice-versa.
S.M.
ANSWER: Amphetamines and
amphetamine-like drugs such as
methylphenidate hydrochlortde
(Ritalin) have been found useful in
treating "hyperactive children."
'Ibis is relatively rare behavioral
disorder though to result from
minor brain damage. When ad
ministered under careful medical
supervision, amphetaniine-type
drugs enable these children -to
focus their energies. '
Undoubtably these same drugs
are often misused to control
normally active children bored by
stultifying school routines which
don't allow for individual dif
ferences.
Dear Dr. Schoenfeld:
Recently the A.M.A.'s president
elect stated he knew of a study
which showed pot smoking causes
impotence and birth defects.
I doubt the validity of this report
from my personal experiences. In
fact I find balling better when I'm
stoned. Anyway, I'd like your
opinion.
ANSWER: No drug should be
taken during pregnancy unless
advised by a physician, but if
marijuana caused birth defects we
would be experiencing an
epidemic of deformed children' -
the thalidomide disaster of a few
years aso would seem small by
comparison. Why doesn't the
A.M.A.'s president-elect reveal thz
study now instead of waiting till
June? If he were right he'd save
many babies.
As for marijuana causing im
potence I refer him and you to an
Ace paperback book called THE
SEXUAL POWER OF
MARIJUANA by Barbara Lewis.
When I spoke with my brother
the psychiatrist About the afleged
link between marijuana, birth
defects and impotency, he said,
*They really know how to hit
where it hurts." The A.M.A.
seems determined to play out its
role as dinosaur. Maybe that's why
most physicians in this country
choose not to belong.
Dr. Schoenfeld welcomes your
letters. Write to him at 2010 7th St.,
