masses.
I am very nearly as unathletic as
Wagner Roberts, and I often think
sports becomes a mania for some.
But condemning all for the sins of
some is like outlawing cars
because some people choose to
commit suicide in them. Or drugs,
or tobacco, or booze. Personally I

find a hard-hitting athletic event
helps me vent my hostilities
almost as much as writing letters
to newspapers.
I wish I could say something that
might make the arrogance of
university officials. I had a few
fights with some people in the
student affairs department myself.
fact is, when you give power to a
small man, he abuses it. CF:
George Wallace, Lester Maddox,
Carl Albert, Richard N[xon, et.~al.
I'm afraid Mr. Roberts is going
to take it in the ear just like those
who came before him. Chin in,
man, college only stops your
education for four years.

Open House
DEAR MR. BEEBE:
On March 10, three women wrote
in to express their distress at the
new hours for open house. The
letter concludes with "we are sure
that many people feel this way and
we wish they would make those
feelings known." Barbara Fricker
and her fellow letter writers are
absolutely right. To you, Barbara,
and to anyone else who cares to
know, we are expressing our
agreement.

Mermaid Fleet
)EAR MR. BEEBE:
I would like to clarify some
apparently vague ideas concerning
the Mermaid Fleet, the auxiliary
girls' unit associated with the
Naval ROTC. We are not in any
way connected with the WAVES or
any other national military
organization.
Our functions involve serving
refreshments at the NROTC social
functions, representing USC at
other schools' NROTC functions
when asked to do so, helping en
tertain orphand, patients in rest
homes. etc.. and helping in comn
munity projects i.e. collecting for
fund drives). We represent,
Carolina in these activities.
'The Mermaids are chosen in the
fall of each year. Any girl on
campus may apply if she has a 2.5
GPR. A tea and an interview aid
the Mermaids and officers tof the
ROTC in selecting new members
who are chosen on the basis of
scholarship, appearance, per
sonality, and both campus and
community activities. 'Te new
pledges receive some instruction
concerning military dress, titles of
address, and names of the officers
of the NROTC on the campus and
wear a uniform each Thursday.
All pledges having a cumulative
2.5~ GPR at the end of their first
semester are honoreti at a banquet
and inducted into the regular fleet.
So as you see, the Mermaid Fleet is.
a rather distinguished group of
you.ng ladies and we are all proud
to represent Carolina in this
manner, It is -not.-mecessary. tof
