When left fielder Pete Carpenter leads off the
batting today against East Tennessee State, he
will offer Columbia its first look at the Carolina
baseball team this year. The game is set for 3
p.m. at the Roost.
Junior Larry Erbaugh is slated to open for
USC on the mound.
Junior college transfer, Carpenter should
give Gamecock rooters a promising glilmse of
the teams future hopes. The outstanding left
handed hitter was honorable mention little All
America at Sloan Jr. College.
Ronny Fulmer, right fielder, and Butch
Anderson will follow the lead batter. Fulmer,
playing his last year for the Gamecocks, has
been "outstanding in the spring workouts"
according to coach Bobby Richardson. An
derson, at shortstop, was the big RBI man and
the mainstay of last years team.
Buddy Cal.dwell, senior first baseman on a
football scholarship, will bit cleanup, and Dru
Choate, at catcher, will follow. Choate is one of
the two freshman in the starting lineup. He was
a high draft choice for the Philadelphia Phillies
and turned down a good offer to play ball for
Carolina. '
Batting fifth will be third baseman Bruce
Pudlock. The power hitter from Cleveland,
Ohio will be followed by Billy Petoskey, centeq
fielder. Petoskey led the team in stolen bases
last year.
P Larry Wolcicki at second base will bat
eighth, and Erbaugh bats ninth.
"Erbaugh," said Richardson, "'was out
standing in relief last year, and I feel he is
ready pro pitch a good brand of baseball for us
this year."
The three sophomore pitchers left in relief
are Alan Hilliard, George Beam, and Bo
Robinson. "All had good years as freshmen and
with their added experience should be even
better," said Richardson.

Eddie Boulton last year's top winner, and Phil

Tommy Moody, who battled Wolcicki all

infield positions and "will see a lot of action this
year" according to Richardson,

outstanding players in Eddie Hill, Donny

good catchers and we will keep all four," said
Richardson.
Other players that Carolina fans will see

Howard Barfield, Mike Johnson, and, "the
