The Student Senate's -Powers
and Responsibilities Committee
decided Wednesday to propose the
formation of a committee to study
coeducational housing.
Committee Chairman Brian
Rines said, "We should insure a
change in housing by September 1,
1972."
The power of appointing the new
committee is to be in the hands of
the new student body president
with the approval of the senate.
Committee members from each of
four housing areas, Capstone,
Sims, Mens' Towers, and one other
area, are provided for in the
proposal, as well as members of
other student committees and
faculty members.
According to Rines, the new

The Law School's Student Legal
Aid Clinic is cautioning students
about salesmen soliciting on
campus without proper
authorization.
In recent weeks, the clinic has
been called on to assist several
students who encountered legal
problems after purchasing
magazine subscriptions from
persons soliciting in dormitories in
violation of university regulations.
The clinic suggests that for their
own protection, students who are
approached by persons alleging to
be sales representatives, notify
their dorm counselor immediately.
The counselors can make a quick
check to determine If the company
is on the approved list.
Students requiring more In

its office in the Law School or

is under construction, is designed

Allowing women to occupy one of

Major objection to this plan is the
cost of refurnishing one of the
Towers.
Another objection is the cost of
hiring additional security forces.
Some members of the committee
said they believe the ad
ministration is aware of the desire
for coed housing and will agree to
it in some form.

Soccer te
varsity re
There are no facilities at present
to give the USC soccer team
varsity recognition, according to
Athletic Director Paul Dietzel.
In response to the soccer team's
request for varsity status, Dietzel
said, "the soccer team wants
someone to take over the financial
responsibility. We are not going to
take on a sport unitl we are ready
financially and can make sure it's
a real, first-class operation."
According to Dietzel, there is no
way to separate financial
responsibility from varsity
recognition.
"The only financial support for
the soccer team comes from the
members of the team", said
Soccer Club president Allan
Rutherfurd.
Funds are not available from the
Student Affairs Committee which
helps support other minor sports
such as rugby and sailing. Dr. Paul
Fidler, chairman of the com
mittee, said funds are distributed
on a priority basis and that soccer
is one of five organizations which
did not receive money.
Charles Witten, vice president
for student affairs, will help the
soccer club in communicating with
the Athletic Department, ac
cording to Dr. Fidler.
Other reasons besides financial
are involved in the soccer team's
request for varsity recognition.
The team cannot play conference
teams without varsity status or
join the Intercollegiate Soccer
Foot Ball Association. Rutherfurd
indicated that he has trouble
getting referees for the games
because of the team's lack of
varsity standing.

Dietzel explained that there are
difficulties other than financial in
taking on the soccer team.
"Varsity status causes a team to
have to rebuild" Dietzel said. He
indicated that ACC regulations
could disqualify many team
members.
Rutherfurd said the team is not
willing to-fight the red tape bet
ween the intramural department,
the student Affairs Committee and
the Athletic Department. He said
the team "has in effect, gien up."
Dietzel said it would be a "major
fiasco to take on a sport before we
can handle it. I want to have soccer
more than they do. I'd rather wait
until we can adequately handle it."

be sent to Premier Alexel Kosygin.
