BEEBE: It's time Dr. Jones, the Board of Trustees, and anyone else who has a hand in running the University of South Carolina realize that the students are the ones who make up the overwhelming majority and that they should have some say-so as to some of the policies which affect them. One such policy, the Open House issue, has been the center *of in terest for several weeks now. It seems many of the students were very dissatisfied with the hours from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sat. and Sun. and wanted a change. Dr. Jones agreed to look into the matter, which he did. In the meantime, in order for their views to be known, the residents of the Men's Towers voted in a referendum; the result over whelmingly in favor of 24 hr. open dorms, seven days a week. The meeting between Dr. Jones and the dorm presidents which ensued was a farce. The presidents expressed their views and gave their reasons why the hours should be extended for week days and weekends, but this was all in vain. Dr. Jones had already made up his mind after a meeting with the faculty. The hours were extended and Friday was even added to the list. But along with this "token" compromise came the stipulations that parental permission must be obtained and a "sign-in, sign-out" policy was to be observed. This is absolutefy ridiculous! Why must a person who is old enough to vote, old enough to drink, and old enough to see "Fanny Hill" get his parents' permission to bring someone to his room? Are Dr. Jones and the faculty afraid that the study habits of Carolina students will change from English, Math, etc. to sex? BEEBE: USC has been organizing a desegregation project for several months now and I'm sure many students have been wondering what happened to it. Well, the project is still in action! The problem is that out of a school of multiple thousands, we are having trouble recruiting a pufficient number of students to work on the project. Perhaps, this is due to the in famous USC, apqthy or perhaps, it is simply due to a general lack of information on the project. The present project involves sending graduates of area high schools now attending USC (along with other interested persons) back to their alma maters to help interested students still attending, these schools relieve their racial tensions and problems. We are not so auvauistic as to believe that USC is so advanced racial-problem wise that we can now afford to generously aid others, but there is such a thing as campus-community relations, and we also hope that by working with the community with its racial problems, we can solve a few of our own through this projeo.t. We are working with the Southern Regional CounI'l which is aiding us with data that they have on problems that have been dealt with in high schools all over the South. To volunteer their much-needed services, students are asked to sign their name, former school and telephone number on a list at the Russell House Information desk.
