Jones meets
Open
By BOB CRAFT
Staff Writer
I came here in good faith. I
came here on the grounds that this
would be a family meeting," said
Dr. Thomas F. Jones, president of
the University of South Carolina as
he spoke to a group of ap
proximately 325 students in the
M&N cafeteria Tuesday afternoon.
Jones came to the Towers after
being invited Monday night during
a meeting of Tower residents.
Jones said that the meeting was a
"family meeting" and asked that
there be no press coverage. Jones
said that if anyone was rude that
he would be obligated to leave.
.Jones started the session by way
of a short speech which he said
should clear up any of the major
questions that the students have.
Jones open the floor to questions
from the students. Jones said that
no adult that he talked to would
buy the idea of full time open
house. Jones said that the faculty
was concerned with "the total
learning environment" and that
the idea would "take time for
acceptance."
Dr. Jones said that "parents are
paying the bills and the legislature
is paying for the University."
The regulation of signing in will
be "to provide information on how
the system is working. Jones said
the records will be used "for
research analysis."'
If a student is caught breaking a
regulation Jones said that the
student will be "given an ap
ropriate hearing, I'm sure."
&PJones told the students "you
don't have total control over this
situation and there is no reason
why you should. You came here
under a set of rules and to demand
change in the middle of the spring
semester is not intrinsically a
right."
