Letters to th,
I0enA Mr1 Beebe:
Student government elections
are approaching and various
groups are organizing to put their
man into office. These students
sincerely believe that their can
didate will make student govern
ment more responsive. They fail to
see that student government is not
an avenue to real change, but an
institution dedicated to preserving
the status quo.
Traditionally students have
claimed that student government
is weak and ineffective. Meager
enthusiasm concerning elections is
witness to this. But contrary to
opinion, student government must
be considered a most effective
agent of the administration. Its
strength lies in its ability to
control the student body by
placating the students through
liberal reforms such as scheduling
exams before Christmas. This
cannot be considered real change
,real change defined as a shift in
the power structure), but only an
effort to illustrate that students
can make "progress" through
their designated government.

Student government was created
by the administration to give just
this illusion of power to the
students. Viewed in this context, it
can he seen how student govern:
ment is an effective part of the
administration.
Last year's strike was an
example of attempted control by
student government. It was
realized that student strikes
spreading across the country, a
similar strike was imminent at
Carolina. Student government
entered the strike'in hopes of
providing a stabilizing influence.
When Russell House was- oc
cupied. student government
played its trump: either the
protesters vacate the building or
student government support would
be withdrawn. Their attempt at
control failed, but it is obvious that
the intent was to limit the effects of
the strike. It must be emphasized
that personalities had nothing to do
with the events; by merely ac
cepting the liberal assumption that
real change could occur through
the present structure, these people
were obligated to support the

existing system. The qualities are
inherent in student government.
not the result of individuals.
Students must become conscious
to the tact the administration is not
a friend but the enemy with
st tdent govenment as its tool. Only
by abolishing student government.
and thus removing this safety
valve. can a student consciousness
be developed. Until this time
students will continue to he
ceceived by this facade of power
that grants small liberal reforms
aimed at denying real power to the
situdents.
A government sanctioned by the
administration is a part of that
power structure; and has a vested
interest in protecting the status
quo. A new organization is needed
that would suggest the essential
antithesis between the student and
the administration. The formaton
of a student alliance outside the
established power structure that
would emphasize the class
structure of the university might
be the answer.
Regardless of the candidate you
choose in the student government
elections on March 24. your vote
will be a vote for administration
control.

The illustrious USC School of
Iducation decided this spring to
ofler a few genuinely meaty and
interesting courses among its
plethora of antiquated 'in

courses in particular had the

and undergraduates in such varied
schools. and departments as

and Art.
In a time when academicians
from diverse disciplines are in

prising that the University of Souh

backwards against this trend.
Specilically. a certain veteran
assistant dean in the largest school
at USC decided last week that a
course in education could never
possibly be of' importance 'let
alone be creditable) for anyone in
his school. In view of this man's
tremendously brilliant academic
credentials tall at the master's

Ilowever. one thing that could be
questioned Is this man's age in
relation to those lives he attempts

The . vocational demands of
students in 1971 are doubtless
somewhat different than they were
-0 or 50 Years ago. So. also are the
curricula demands required in
preparation for vocational goals in
1N71 changed. This is evidenced by
the new curricula revisions to be
implemented at USC next fall.
