Thurmo moves vi susp c101 Sen. Strom Thurmond is to be commended for his recent appointment of a black to his staff. The appointment of Tom Moss of Orangeburg should be a partial victory for the progressive elements of South Carolina. Let's hope it isn't a pyrrhic victory. We have to view this step somewhat suspiciously. After all, Strom Thurmond is not noted for a pro. integration stance. Some so-called experts have stated that this appointment was conceived to demonstrate Thurmond's move toward the middle. Others have said that it was a "move to woo the black vote" so he could "save his political life in his re-election battle next year." We'd have to go along with the latter reason for the siufple fact that all the influence that Thurmond promised to have with the Nixon administration has floundered. Surely, Thurmond realizes that. Thurmond's power with the administration has weakened so much that the Democrats ran a commercial during retillt M1|6( nd's ewed LSly the recent off-year elections concerning Thurmond's promises' called "Broken Promises. We would even venture to say that Thurmond is running scared, because of all the debris from both his own party in South Carolina and the people of the state. If this Is in fact true, then let us label his appointment of Moss as a last resort and not a truly progressive move. Let us not be fooled by this hoax. This isn't a step in the right direction; it is a step to get votes and nothing else. This will probably be revealed in due time when Moss is shown to have very little say so in South Carolina affairs. In other words, Moss is Thurmond's token black. We just can't believe that Thurmond would desert his pro-segregation stand for non personal reasons. Let's really make a positive move this re election time: get rid of Thurmond, vote Moss in and then maybe have Moss appoint Thur mond to his staff. ) DAY.
