CHARLOTTE, N. C.--USC's
Gamecocks seek revenge for two
straight losses tonight when they
meet perennial Southern Con
ference champion Davidson here
at Charlotte Coliseum.
Davidson has defeated the
Gamecocks the past two season
since tne two schools renewed an
old rivalry that had been dormant
since 1955. USC won in 1954.
The Wildcats won 62-55 in 1969
and sprung a 68-62 upset last year
at Carolina Coliseum. However,
the chiei architect of that Davidson
triumph, Bryan Adrian, has seen
action in only three games this
season due to recurring injuries.
Adrian has managed an 18.0
average in his brief appearences.
The former high school teammate
of USC's Bob Carver and Kevin
Joyce may not be ready to go
against Carolina.
In the absence of his slick
shooting guard Davidson coach
Terry Holland has had to rely on 6
6 senior Steve Kirly, 6-7 sophomore
Joe Sutter and a stingy defense.
Sutter is the top scorer with an
14.9 average while Kirly is hitting
12.6 per outing. The defense is
ranked ninth nationally with a 66.4
average. Davidson may try to take

advantage of their defense with a
slowdown type offense.
Davidson is 10-8 overall with a 6
1 SC record and a 4-7 outside mark.
Carolina is 8-0 against outside
competition, 5-4 in ACC play and 3
4 on the opponents home court.
"South Carolina has the talent to
beat anybody," said Holland. "The
ways they have of controlling a
game are remarkable.
"They have the ability of con
trolling the boards at both ends of
the floor. They have fine overall

speed, can fast break well and they
have good shooters.
"They have had some trouble
against slowdowns but that should
not give them trouble with the.
talent they have. They are good
enough to beat anybody at any kind
of a game."
Besides Sutter and Kirly,
Davidson will start Duncan
Postma, Eric Minkin and John
Pecorak-unless Adrian is set to
go.
Postma is scoring 9.3 a game
while getting 3.6 rebounds. Minkin
is hitting at a 10.0 clip and is the
leading Wildcat rebounder with a
7.1 mark. Pecorak is scoring 8.6 in
the balanced Davidson attack but
is more important for his 6.0
rebounds.
Davidson reserves who may see
action are headed by Gordon
Graham and Billy Pierce who each
are hitting over four points a
game. Ron Seltzer has a 3.2 scoring
mark and Lester Strong a 2.3
average.
All-America John Roche, who
has started controlling the USC
offense more in the past three
games than earlier in the year,
heads the Gamecock scoring
corps.
Roche is hitting 21.8 points per
game, including 23, 56 and 28 in the
last three outings. Junior center
Tom Riker is the number two
scorer with a 15.8 mark and is also
the number two USC rebounder
with a 9.2 mark. Tom Owens is
scoring at a 14.8 clip and hauling
down 10.9 rebounds.
Sophomore Kevin Joyce is hit
ting 13.0 points per game and has a
4.6 rebound mark. Bob Carver has
a 6.3 scoring average and Rick
Aydlett follows with a 5.4 mark.
John Ribock will get the starting
nod if Coach Frank McGuire
decides to go with his 'muscle
lineup' while Carver gets the nod if
the emphasis is on speed. Ribock is
hitting 2.0 per game.
