By SCOTT DE RKS
Staff Writer
A proposal to drop D's and F's from the grading scale was passed by
Faculty Senate Wednesday in a close vote.
The plan will allow students "a forgiveness clause" by awarding a gr,
of NC rather than D or F. When the plan goes into effect, students will h,
all GPRs recomputed with the F's dropped. D's will not be affected.
The system will operate on a 12 month basis, and a student will
required to complete successfully at least 50 per cent of all courses
tempted. Failure to do this will result in a one year suspension, but th
will be no indefinite suspensions for academic reasons.
This system will not affect the Law School or graduate students.
All grades will become a permanent part of the student's record
remain on the transcirpt.
Dr. Perry Ashley, Chairman of the Petitions Committee and authoi
the proposal, said he hoped that the new system might help raise
standards of the University.
"By this system we will insure that students will have the backgroi
they need. We will not accept D work anymore," Ashley said. "I v

the will probably fall French 102. We are not accepting borderline work.
"I don't think any ,more students will fall out under this system, but it
might catch. some sooner." Under the present system of GPR grading a
ade student could attemot 116 hours and pass only 15 hours over a five year
3ve' time and stay in school, Ashley said.
When the plan will go into effect is still under discussion. The proposal
calls for the plan to begin on June 1, but problems of Implementation may
be force the new system to begin next fall." The plan calls for a system that is
at. completely different from the one we have now. It will require a complete
redoing to implement it," Dr. William Eccles, director of the Computer
Center, said.
"The faculty wants this plan implemented by the first summer session.
and That is a physical impossibility with the staff we have now and especially
under the financial cutback. It will take more time than we have the
manpower to cover," he said.
of The new plan is a progressive one and relatively untried in the
the Southeast. "We are plowing new ground, but we think it is a very workable
system that will overcome some inequities such as a student being

lew judged on one year's work at a time," Ashley said.
