Howard White, who scored 38
points in the abbreviated contest at
Columbia, had only four against
State and saw his average slip
from 20 per game to 18.7. O'Bried
Is hitting at a 224 clip in only- five
games.
Sparky Still heads the Maryland
rebounding corps with 12.1
recoveries a game. Still is also
scoring at a 13.5 rate. Barry Yates,
former All-Navy star, is pulling
down 9.1 rebounds and scoring 12.9
points every time he walks onto the
floor.
Charlie Blank, the other Terp
starter, is averaging 10.5 per
game. If O'Brien, who is sure to
see plenty of action after playing 26
minutes against State, doesn't
start then Bob Bodell will get the
nod along with his 6.8 scorig
mark.
All-America John Roche con
tinues to lead the Gamecocks in
scroing with a 22.0 mark, slightly
below his career average. Tom
Riker is second with 20.0 points per
game and Tom Owens, seemingly
finally recovered from a bout with
intestinal flu, third with a 17.2
mark.
Kevin Joyce has a 14.9 mark to
go with his 55 per cent shooting
from the floor. Bob Carver, a
doubtful participant with a
sprained ankle suffered against
Temple, has a 5.4 mark. Rick
Adylett has a 4.4 slate followed by
Danny Traylor at 1.8 and John
Ribock at 1.7.
Owens continues to pace the
conference in rebounding as he has
for the past two years. He is
hauling down 13.5 stray shots a
game while Riker has 20.8 per
game.
Scout names
Sidney Wicks is the best college
basketball player in the nation,
according to Milwaukee Bucks
scout Tom Nissalke in a story
released by the Associated Press
Thursday.
However, Wicks may not be
drafted first because the team that
drafts may want a big center. In
other words, Jacksonville's Artis
Gilmore.

Either a lot of people are in the dark about the same thing,
or the Atlantic -Coast Conference's high officials, coaches,
and journalists are running around like a group of
decapitated chickens over a story that appeared in
yesterday's edition of the Spartanburg Herald.
An 'inside' story written by the Herald reported that
seven ACC players had been put on probation for incidents
that have occurred during the present basketball season.
First reports indicated that among these seven were USC's
John Roche and John Ribock.
The Gamecock spoke to the Herald last night, in an at
tempt to get the straight story. They were sure that all of
.their information was correct, with the exception of a
question as to the number of players put on probation by
Maryland. "Lefty told me today that only one of his boys
was put on probation," the Herald said.
The Herald also revealed that all the action taken came as
a result of the fight that erupted between Maryland and USC
on December 16. "The action was an Atlantic Coast Con
ference decision taken as.a direct result of the fight. It did
not come from the commissioner's office, nor did it come
from any of the coaches."
The Herald said that all- the probations actually were
"handslaps." Of course, another incident like what hap
pened against Maryland, and the suspensions will be in
voked, barring a player or players from competing for the
remainder of the year.
Meanwhile, the Herald asked me not to press them for
information on the incident, saying that they did not wish to
reveal the identity of their source. For the source's sake,
they had better not. For it appears that the informant is
somewhat misinformed.
"All I can say is that I'm absolute about the validity of the
story," they stated. I specifically asked them about Roche
and Ribock, and they confirmed the fact of their probation.
But a reliable source from within the USC Athletic
Department told The Gamecock that Roche was not one of
the players. It was Rick Aydlett. RICK AYDLETT? He was
simply defending himself from the attack of some over
reactive Maryland player. Why should he be singled out?
It could be that Maryland Coach Lefty Dreisell is behind
the whole story. The assumption is based on the fact that
whenever the Herald spoke of the Terp mentor, it was
"Lefty this and Lefty that." And the only discrepancy that
they were aware of was within the Maryland structure.
So here we stand. The Commissioner says he knows
nothing about it. The writer seems to have an uninformed
informer. Lefty Dreisell is on a first name basis with some
sportswriter he probably had never heard of. And Norvall
Neve doesn't have any Idea what a leak in his office is.
