Catch2
By JERRY CALABRESE
Most people who have read ty
"Catch 22"in book form tend to act
with a degree of bellgerence
towards the Mike Nichols film
version.
"Catch 22" hurdles the transition
from print to screen about as well
as any book has. This does not
mean that the film follows the
novel in plot or sequence. What it
does mean Is that "Catch 22"
manages to create a feeling close
to the one created in the book.
'be insanity of war under any
circumstances, the bi=are
paronoia and the helpless feeling of
being the only sane man in the
world come through in Nichols
film.
One of the criticisms tacked onto
"Catch 22" is that the scene
sequence is confusing. It's been
said that it is hard to determine
what is a flashback and what is
not.
If one goes to this film and looks
for reality or a logical sequence of
events, he will be sorely dissap
pointed. The only way to see
"Catch 22" is to go with the film.
That is, to accept whatever it
shows you whenever it shows you.
Yossarian is not as sane as he
appears. And that is the catch,
Catch 22.
The viewer sees the events and
the characters through the ex
clusive eyes of Yossarian and
believes that Yossarian is the only
sane man in the entire film.
Nichols does an excellent job of
putting you into Yossarian's head,
to the point where you might even
accept the events as Yossarian
sees them.
What must be kept in mind is
that Yossarian is as crazy as the
rest of the characters.
lie sees things as insane and, for
Yossarian. it is valid. What must
be asked is whether Major Major
or Colonel Korn are as crazy as
Yossarian thinks they are. Does
Yossarian exaggerate? Does he
really see the things he shows the
viewer?
Regardless of whether
Yossarian is crazy or not. Nichols
manages to put forth the ultimate
paronoia in his treatment. Wat
ching "Catch 22" you understand
what it must be like to be the only
sane man left alive.
Yossarian. crazy or not, thinks
he IS the only sane man alive.
The point here is not the sanity or
insanity but the conviction of
Yossarian. Sane or-not: Yossaran
thinks he is. Sane or not, Yosgarian
thinks everyone else isn't.
To review "Catch 22" is perhaps
the most difficult thing I have ever
done. It's like reviewing chocolate
ice cream. 1 might think it's the
best thing since flush toilets while
someone else might think it stinks.
many people, to some it sym
bolizes the ultimate insanity of
war. To others it may be an ex
cercise in the bizarre. A
surrealistic war film. In reality it
is all of these things.
"Catch 22" could be kicked
around for years; its symbolism
could be picked apart by all
manner of people, and still there 1
would be as many opinions about
the film as there are ~iewers.
To me. "Catch 22" sin best be
viewed with an open mi ri. Open to
whatever Mike Nichols an Joseph
Keller have decided to tlN"et.
vou. Forget about reality, unity
and structure: they will only
conluse. -
'Tatch 22" is the ultimate
contusion, and that is its'clarity.lIt
is an impression: a feeling. It is the *
everything excuse: the unsolvable
mystery. It is the hitch in all plans,
it is "Catch 22."
