Letters to the edi Mandatoi Dear Miss Manning: It seems as the semester progresses, questions have arisen concerning the foreign language programs here at the University. Questions ranging from the effectiveness of language labs to the validity of the course as a mandatory one for certain majors have been voiced by many students. These questions are worthy of qualified answers, but so far, at least to my knowledge, have received none. I am not inferring that the entire foreign languages program should be abolished or that the subject is not one of enough substance to be majored in; quite the con trary. Foreign language majors are very much needed for today's world. How can we begin to un derstand if we cannot even begin to communicate? However, as it has appeared to me, a foreign language is the type of subject one cannot go halfway with in order to obtain valuable knowledge from. Grammar of any type requires many hours of practice and applied use to master. Bearing these facts in mind, it would stand to reason thwt to satisfactorily learn a new language, that is, to have the ability to intelligently converse in that languaage, it would require several semesters that con centrated on the basics of a language. As it stands now, when a foreign~ language is taken. as a required sub, one must take two semesters of it. If an average student worked exceptionally hard on the subject he might obtain an acceptable degree of conversation. However, if a student did not have the desire or ability to obtain such a level of knowledge, he would have little more than a strictly basic concept of the language. Also, as for a foreign languagi course, educating students in othei areas of the subject, such as the culture of the people, to m: knowledge, do nothing o significance. I'm sure you've heard those deadly serious professors who stand behind their pulpits and exhort us to be committed, compassionate, and concerned; and who exhort us to be committed, compassionate, and concerned; and who praise Gandhi and Martin Luther King; and who loudly proclaim their humanity. SThere are two kinds of g humanitarianism-one springing r from divine origins and the other -with its roots in Man. The latter, awhich is the kind long preached by liberals, is doomed to failure by definition. The liberal-left ist goes through life with a vague sense of quilt because he has so much and others have so little, and in order to purge that guilt, he tries to buy his salvation with welfare programs and such. Unfortunately, the price of a ticket to Paradise in terms of dollars and cents is quite prohibitive. The English philosopher of history. Christopher Dawson, argued that rationalist liberalism was able to play a humane and progressive social role only because it was drawing on the moral capital of the Christian religious tradition. But as liberalism more and more rejects Christianity and turns toward rabid secularism, it becomes, ironically, more and more anti human.
