"The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams will be
presented by the University Theatre at Drayton Hall this
weekend. Performances will begin at 8:15 p.m. and the play
will end Saturday.
The USC Theatre's production of "Menagerie" is a very
good show. Williams' play is an extremely loaded one,
however, and It would take exceptionally poor per
formances and direction to ruin it.
Williams manages to touch upon so many universal
tender spots that any audience can and usually does accept
and associate with his play.
USC's "Menagerie" is good not only on the strength of
Williams'- script. The performances are solid and in spots
very good.
Bonnie Stroup who plays the lame girl Laura, does a good
job. Her portrayal of the introverted cripple girl is
somewhat sensitive and at times moving. Her only flaw is
that she herself from time to time becomes uncomfortable
with her role.
Nancy Dennis as Laura's mother has perhaps the
toughest job. It is her duty to show the tragedy and heart
break of the situation *ithout alienating the audience by her
constant nagging and mirOpulation of her children. Miss
Dennis is successful about half the time.
The best performance in "Menagerie" is undoubtedly
given by Jim Thigpen. Thigpen plays Tom, the sole support
of his cripple sister and his nagging mother.
Tom is born between the responsibility of taking care of
his family or catering to his personal wants and desires.
Thigpen does a fine lob of preventing the moving dialog
from turning into schmaltz'instead of moving emotion.
"The Glass Menagerie" is a very finely written play and
on this particular occasion a well acted one; see it.
There seems to be a plethera of plays being presented in
the Columbia area at this time. For an inside look at
"Harvey,"' Columbia College's latest attempt, see Rob
Bigalke's review below.
Columbia College's production of "Harvey" will play at 8
p.m. today and tomorrow at the Cottingham Theater of
Columbia College. This comedy about an old man's com
panion (a six foot-three white rabbit which no one else can
see) is likely to be the best theater fare of this season in
Columbia.
Director Gene Eaker has assembled one of the finest
casts I have seen in years, headed by veteran actor David
Dreiman as Mr. Elwood P. Dowd. Dreiman's forte seems
to be comedy, although he is a noted choreographer. He
brings to the role of Dowd a delicately handled finesse
which creates a gentleman of charm, wit and a thoroughly
.beautiful eccentricity.
Betty Fridy's portrayal of Veta Louise Simmons, Dowd's
matronly elder sister, is nothing short of outstanding. Diane
Wilder's Myrtle Mae Simmons leaves nothing to be desired
as a girl getting desparate because her uncle scares away
all her boyfriends. Lynn Josselson as Nurse Ruth Kelly is
perfect. She is a good actress too. Roger Cobb's charac

The question of Peace Corps
intervention in foreign affairs was
raised Wednesday in a film shown
by Peace Corps recruiters.
"The Foreigners" portrayed
Peace Corps workers in Columbia
trying to help local people "secure
their rights" through working with
the local government.
The film has been recalled by the
Peace Corps several times due to
the content. A private film making
company, King Stream Produc
tions, made the film.
Along with showing bureaucratic
red tape, the film portrayed the
misery of Colombians who earn an
average of $275 a year. Graphic
shots of children suffering from
malnutrition, as well as baby
funerals, were shown.
The original film had been two
hours long, according to one of the

workers but was cut down to its
present one-hour length. The
recruiters said that "The
Foreigners" had stirred a good
deal of controversy in the Peace
Corps.
One worker had said that this
situation was not typical of all
Peace Corps fields--that in most
countries it was impossible to work
with the government or present
petitions to local officials.
Workers in the film discussed the
possibilities of creating a "cultural
revolution" in Colombia. They
were also told in the film that they
were not doing too much work in
the area, according to some
citizens of the Colombian town.
Today will be the last day to see
the recruiters about joining the
Peace Corps. They will be at a
table in the first floor lobby of
Russell House.

How do you know when a rat's

her own, studying the teratogenic
effects of dextroamphetamine

Sound a little steep? What it
really means is that she's studying
any malformalities in the fetus of
rats who have been injected with
amphetamines. Martha went on to
explain her experiment:

Jones is oppo

Dr. Thomas F. Jones, president
of USC said Monday he opposes
any increase in student fees
"except as a last resort."
James A. Morris, commissioner
of higher education, suggested
higher fees as one way of meeting
rising costs as he testified before
the House Ways and Means
Committee.
Jones said that only ten other
states have higher fees than those
charged at Carolina.
Morris then suggested the
number of non-resident students be
limited and more freshmen be
channeled into two-year colleges.
